CREATIVE QUOTIENT
The Drummer is about a pompous youth, Sid, who drums for his rock band and sleeps with the mistress of his boss (Kenneth Tsang), and in the process gets into deep trouble. In trying to shield his son, dad (Tony Leung), a typical hot-headed gangland leader, sends him packing to a rural part of Taiwan till things die down. During this exile, Sid comes across the training grounds of the Zen Drummers that changes his life forever.
TECHNICAL EXPERTISE
A cross between a Hong Kong gangster flick and a coming-of-age film, The Drummer, is to be seen for the brilliant sequences of drumming. The script and direction leave a lot to be desired. Jaycee Chan (Jackie Chan’s son)’s performance is lukewarm. But the mediocrity of the film is diluted by the drumming sequences.
Verdict
One for the script. One for the drumming sequences and sound design.
