Subway
The shooting of Dharma Productions' and UTV’s unusual love story Kurbaan, which centres around terrorism, had Kareena Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan and Vivek Oberoi freezing on the streets of Philadelphia. Director Rensil D'Silva says, "A major portion of our shoot in the American city was in subways. We had hired eight subways for 21 days with a good many sequences being shot at night. Adding to the challenge was the temperature, which was -18 degrees, the coldest the city has seen in the last ten years! Even the heaters were little help in such extreme weather. While the rest of us had the luxury of jackets and woollens, Kareena was deprived of this while she gave her shots. But yet, she made sure her teeth wouldn't chatter during her scenes and after them would run back to the heater." This was during shooting action sequences under the guidance of Hollywood professionals who have worked on projects such as Pirates Of The Carribean and Vantage Point. Talking about the most challenging bit of the schedule, D'Silva says, "For the time that we shot on the subways, we also hired trains. And while the shoot was fun, it was difficult to get the train to stop at the exact point where I wanted it to." It is easy to believe the director's claim when he says that the shoot was "fun" because the subways were exactly the ones he had in mind while he set off for a recce. In fact, in his quest for the perfect location, the filmmaker had visited subways across Russia, France and Germany before zeroing down on Philadelphia.

Apart from the subway scenes, the unit also shot a few portions in and around the Web Institute in Philadelphia and in New York before flying back to India. Narrating an interesting episode back home, D'Silva offers, "We had to import a few body-part dummies to use in the blast sequences. Convincing the airport authorities that these were required for a film shoot wasn’t easy." If dealing with authorities and getting permission in India and abroad was a necessary task, handling the crowds of fans gathering for a glimpse of Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor back in Delhi and Pune was something that came to the filmmaker unexpectedly. While shooting on a street in Janpath, D'Silva was shocked when after explaining the scene to the actors, he returned back to his seat at the monitor to find a good 10,000 people surrounding the two!
