In April 2002, the city sessions court had acquitted 18 of the 19 accused, handing a life imprisonment to sharpshooter Rauf Merchant. The case was re-opened after the arrest of Abdul Qayyum Shaikh in the 1993 bomb blasts case and who was said to be the prime accused along with Abu Salem in the conspiracy to kill Grover.
The prosecution had only two witnesses — approver Shaikh and one Arif Lakdawala (whose testimony was discredited by the court) — to prove the conspiracy charge against the 19 accused.
“Now the prosecution once again wants to look into the matter with a fresh hope to be able to get more convictions along with arrest of the main accused,” said a special public prosecutor.
The case has been adjourned till August 25 when the court will decide if it would go ahead and examine the witnesses once again or will recall the witnesses who have already deposed.
