The wait is finally over for Sonu Sood. Though the actor has been in films since 10 years, the time has come now for the 32-year-old to have what he wanted when he landed in the island city from the distant Moga a decade back: good roles.

Soon he will be seen in a crucial role alongside Akshay Kumar in Singh Is Kinng. He is also playing 11 characters in UTV’s forthcoming Dhoondte Reh Jaoge and the lead in Rajshri Production’s Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi. He has also signed J P Dutta’s next magnum opus.

But things weren’t easy for the electronics engineer. “It took me 10 years to prove to the directors and producers that there is someone who can do good to a project,” says the actor, who like many others had his share of struggles in tinseltown. His career graph changed post this year’s Jodhaa Akbar, where he breathed Sujamal Bhaisa to life.

In Singh, he plays Kinng, a don of the dons in Australia, who virtually rules the country. “All the people in the underworld work for him. However, he’s a simpleton whose roots are in Punjab,” informs Sood. Akshay Kumar plays his childhood friend, who goes to Australia to bring him back to his family in Punjab.

Sood, who loves his resemblance to Amitabh Bachchan of the ’70s, is playing Bachchan in two of his popular avatars in Dhoondte. “It’s like a film in a film. There I play Aamir Khan of Lagaan, Sunny Deol from Gadar, Shah Rukh Khan from Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge and Bachchan from Sholay and Deewar,” he says.

The actor lets on, “The film’s about an actor who suddenly loses interest in a film and his duplicates are approached to complete it. I play all my duplicates.” Ask him about being a look-alike of the most important man in Hindi cinema and he says, “It’s a great responsibility when you look like someone who has achieved so much in life. I wish if I could do just 10 per cent of whatever he has done.”

Sood has added another feather to his cap by playing Prem in Ek. Those clued in know that the name has been traditionally associated with romantic heroes of hit releases from Rajshri banner. Both Salman Khan in Maine Pyar Kiya and Shahid Kapoor in Vivah were Prem. Are we then looking forward to a new romantic hero? “Let’s hope for the best. Playing Prem is a dream for any actor,” he says, spilling excitement.
