Slumdog millionaire'Slumdog Millionaire' swept the Oscars, winning eight awards including best picture and two for A R Rahman.
A R Rahman has become the first Indian to win two Oscars for his scintillating music in ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ which swept the Academy awards winning eight with one going to sound engineer Resul Pookutty.

‘Slumdog Millionaire’, a rags-to-riches story of a Mumbai slum dweller, who goes on to win INR 20 million in a quiz show, was adjudged the best film.

It also fetched Danny Boyle the Best Director award, Simon Beaufoy best Adapted Screenplay and Anthony Dod Mantle the best Cinematography award. The film was also awarded for Best Editing.

A beaming 43-year-old Rahman said: "Before coming here I was excited and terrified. The last time I felt that way was when I was getting married.

"There is a Hindi dialogue 'mere pass ma hai' which means even if I have got nothing I have my mother here. I want to thank her for coming all the way to support me," Chennai- born Rahman said in his acceptance speech after bagging the Original Score Oscar.

The foot-tapping number 'Jai ho', with lyrics by Gulzar, was adjudged the Best Song.

Pookutty, who hails from Kerala's Kollam district, received the award for Best Sound Mixing with co-recordists Ian Tapp and Richard Pryke.

‘Slumdog Millionaire’, based on Indian diplomat Vikas Swarup's novel ‘Q & A’, came to the 81st Academy Awards ceremony with 10 nominations and failed to win only in the Sound Editing category. Rahman had also received a nomination in the Best Song category for 'O saya' in the film.

Veteran filmmaker Satyajit Ray was awarded a lifetime achievement Oscar in 1992 and prior to that Bhanu Athaiya won one for costume design in Richard Attenborough's "Gandhi" in 1983.

There was more good news as ‘Smile Pinki’, the tale of a Uttar Pradesh girl and her fight against the social stigma of a cleft-lip, won the Oscar award for Best Documentary (Short). Directed by Emmy-award winning Megan Mylan, the film was shot in Mirzapur and Varanasi of Uttar Pradesh.

‘Slumdog Millionaire’ edged past Brad Pitt-starrer ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’, which had 13 nominations. The film won three Oscars.

Kate Winslet won Best Actress Oscar for her role as a Nazi prison guard in ‘The Reader’ while Sean Penn was awarded the best Actor Oscar his portrayal of a gay-rights activist for ‘Milk’.

Heath Ledger bagged the Oscar posthumously for best Supporting Actor for his diabolic role of 'Joker' in ‘The Dark Knight’. Penelope Cruz picked up her first Oscar as she was named the Best Supporting Actress for the role in ‘Vicky Cristina Barcelona’.

Rahman, wearing a black bandhgala, also performed a medley of 'Jai ho' and 'O saya' assisted by dancers and singer John Legend.

The singer, who shot into fame in Bollywood with his score in Mani Ratnam's Roja, had earlier pocketed a Golden Globe and a BAFTA for his music ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ besides a host of other awards.

It was an "unbelievable moment" for the ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ team which stole the show at the red carpet with lead lady Frieda Pinto being the cynosure of all eyes in her elegant blue John Galliano gown.

She was joined by co-star and the film's lead protagonist British-Indian Dev Patel, clad in a black tuxedo.

Also dressed for the occasion in tuxedos and beautiful frocks were the two 'Salims' (Mohammad Azharuddin and Ashutosh Gaajiwala) and two 'Latikas' (Rubina Ali Qureshi and Tanvi Lonkar) were visibly excited to be present at the greatest awards night in Hollywood.

Slumdog Team by Manphool Dabas on 2009-03-04 03:15:26.268203+05:30 My heartiest congratulations to the entire 'Slumdog Millionaire' team for producing a movie which has brought honor to India. While other Indians in the Movie are settled actors, my special appreciation goes for the slum kids, especially Rubina and Azhar who performed the most difficult part of the Movie; in fact the Best Picture award was also the result of their performance. AR Rahman undoubtedly is the music king of India with international recognition. I would request all concerned to ensure that the slum kids involved have a better life and all opportunities.

Heriditary ingratitude by Ved from Victoria Institutions on 2009-03-02 10:22:22.852394+05:30 Basically any Indian who is lucky to become associated with the British anywhere in any enterprise is more or less destined to be a winner. But no one really acknowledges this grand link and connection, and instead praise his or her own family, mother, father, heritage, and much else. I do not think that any person who works under Indian bosses can aspire for such glamour. The Indian boss will commit suicide out of sheer terror and insecurity!

Is there anything to rejoice and celebrate? by H Srinivas on 2009-02-24 08:32:16.065579+05:30 There is nothing in three Oscars to rejoice or celebrate for India and Indian. In the first place this film is a crap and would not have been nominated for Oscar in any category had it been produced and directed by an Indian. Besides, who are well versed with history of Indian cinema will agree that Indian film and Indians should have got many Oscars in all categories for many of movies produced in Indian languages. All moves of Sri Satyjit Ray should have got best film awards and he should have got best director awards. A R Rahman music is nothing when compared to those of Nuashad, Burmans, Salil Choudary and many other great musicians.

Slumdog Millionaire winning 8 Oscar Awards in 81st Oscar award 2009 by P.R.S.Narayana on 2009-02-23 21:42:23.67723+05:30 Great achievement to an Indian Film. Great achievement to A.R.Rehman for his music debut. Hearty congratulations to all the actors, producer, director and his crew and other technical and non-technical staff. But I got a pinching on seeing the name of the film as 'Slumdog Millionaire'. I could not digest it being Indian. I feel it should be 'Slumboy Millionaire' which might not have hurt the sentiments and feelings of Indians. It is achieved for Indian author, Indian Musician, Indian Scenerio but foreign producer and Director. However it is a great achievement to Indians in Film field at International standards. Hats off. The spirit may please be continued. Jai Hind. P.R.S.

Not an Indiam movie... stop the white fetish! by Amit on 2009-02-23 20:17:40.395254+05:30 Danny Boyle did not thank anyone from India not even the Indian company that managed the logistics for this film, for the success. I have seen the movie and the only reason it has made this far is because it was directed by a Britisher. What he came up with was a poverty porn. This is not a racial slur. It was Pookutty's speech that had something to with India and Indian culture. By no way this movie makes India proud. It does bring out that there is talent in Indian industry. But, honestly who cares if outside world thinks there is talent in India or not. It is good that Rehman got the oscar, but did not deserve it for this film. Lot of other movies where he has been more than oscar worthy.. either ways.. nothing against him on that one.

Slum Dog Millionaire by Arvind K Mathur on 2009-02-23 19:43:46.539549+05:30 A great film and book which shows India as it is. Great people living in poverty. AR Rehman, Gulzar and Pokutti have done India proud. To all those hypocrites in Bollywood - this is real India not the lavish feelgood stuff depicted in a lot of Bollywood scenes. I think this film is closer to the real India. There is no shame in showing what we really are so that our lousy leaders wake up and work for the people and not themselves and their families.

Ilaya Raja The Maestro by Santosh on 2009-02-23 17:58:10.128348+05:30 We're confused about Slumdog Millionaire. It's not an Indian cinema it's made-to-order for a western audience by a westerner. It is Ilaya, the Mozart of Indian mainstream music and not Rahman the genius. Rahman's best music compositions are in in Tamil cinema. The songs in SM are average compared to his original songs for Tamil movies.

Slumdog by Sharad C. Misra on 2009-02-23 16:49:54.044685+05:30 Why should India go euphoric about this film produced by a foreigner. ? It does make sense to be proud of A.R. Rahman, Indians actors, editing, color-mixing technological excellence of the film etc. . But what is there to be happy about the fact that it depicts poverty, squalor, crime and corruption in Mumbai slums. It shows that more than 60 years after independence things have not changed. .Rather than feeling proud of the Indian underdog making it to the top to be the millionaire we were horrified to see the realities of slum life which are as repugnant as the conditions of Kolkata depicted in the film based on the book “City of Joy” against which there were violent demonstrations in the city. For that reason people of Varanasi did not allow Meera Nair’s film “Water” depicting the plight of Indian widows to be shot in Varanasi. If such films are produced by Indian producers for domestic consumption with the message to improve our society it makes sense. But it they are meant to sell scenes of poverty and squalor packaged in celluloid to Americans who would otherwise never believe what India is like we would call it a national disgrace.

2 Oscar awards for slum dog millionaire
by rachna on 2009-02-23 22:02:58.578388+05:30It is a bitter fact. Movies or books depicting povery and backwardness of Indiaae selected for awards by the western world. Let these talented film makers make a film on, " chandrayana". It will not be given a preview also. Knowing this fact our artists are also selling the squalor and poverty but do not mention the strides of development India has made.

3 Why not depict poverty in India.... are you ashamed of it?
by Pawan on 2009-02-23 20:55:35.114647+05:30My dear, Why do we indians keep hiding the facts about our countrx. No doubt india created intelligent people for years now. But the face of india that is poor and criminal or racist do exists. If you are going to hide a wound thinking it will heal hidden, then it may get worse due to lack of tratment. Let world know that we are still developing and that we are still changing. For your refernce, there are places in America even worse than what they have shown in this movie. Hollywood moviea are as unreal as you can imagine.I will never understand when indians will start to accept reality. Why would you like to have a blind eye thinking everything is doing well, when actually it is not. While accepting god things happening in india, it is really important to accept the disgraceful things of this countries. This will make yyou stronger at the end to change somthing and not just sit there and be judgmental all the time.

4 POVERTY OF INDIA IS REAL
by A.Kader on 2009-02-23 19:38:09.083894+05:30Madam, you know well that the poverty of India is real, the poor people suffer, although it is probably not affecting you. Anyway, there is no sense in trying to hide it or call it a disgrace. The real disgrace of India is created by the rich Indiansas they are the ones who have created the poverty for the poor. Thanks to Boyle for depicting the truth about India to the outside world, perhaps it would be an eye-opener to some sensible people who would help the poor.

LAPTOP BEGGARS by victor frank on 2009-02-23 14:11:05.583711+05:30 LAPTOP BEGGARSIn the days of global recession, financial crisis and economic melt down, the movie, Slumdog Millionaire, a characteristic ‘rags to riches’ theme has won 8 Oscar awards by showing light on 80% of India’s population which survives on Rs. 20 a day. Poverty has really gone Global. The film producers can now turn on to a new ‘riches to rags’ theme which will definitely fetch the same awards. I would suggest the title as ‘Laptop Beggars’, a true life story of failed American dreamers. Victor Frank,Chennai 600 001.February 23, 2009

Congrats!! by John Thomas on 2009-02-23 11:53:40.722181+05:30 Congratulations Rahman and Resul!! You made us very proud. Whether the film is British or Indian, Rahman and Resul are Indian citizens as their ancestors were for the last few thousands of years. So I feel great. The entire world from Japan to Europe honours Oscar award. So it is not just a western recognition, but really world wide recognition. Also most of us dislike this film just because of our age long attitude to say that those poor relatives of ours are not at all our relatives and never mind them. This is a common problem in our communities. None of us want to say that the slum dwellers depicted in the movie are Indians at all. I have heard some guys expressing their concerns for not showing the IT cities, great buildings, industrial growth of the country, etc. in this movie!

Pride missing by Ganesh on 2009-02-23 10:37:46.70972+05:30 I have no complaints about Slum Dog being a movie depicting Indian misery. But I cannot understand our urge for western recognition for what ever we do.A.R Rahman was as good even without this recognition. We want praise for Sachin Tendulkar from visiting team members. Our umpires want recognition from visiting team players so they go out of the way to please them.Any movie that does well in the west is invariably appreciated here as well.I strongly feel that Indian race were the last human beings to get transformed form apes.We are capable but can only ape others (even better than them). We have no national or racial pride. It is okay to appreciate someone who wins an international sports event. Because sports events are not decided by opinions like in an art form. The same grovelling goes even in beauty paegents.I know i will be out run by the posts in favour of this farce called oscar but atleast I am proud of not bowing to our colonial heads.Proud to be Indian Jai Hind

They depicted India's misery?, they depicted the truth actually. Why do you dislike TRUTH. Do something to develop India, blame the politicians, change the country instead of talking vain talk. Indian movies hide India, that is not real. LEarn to love reality, if you want a posh India change India, uplift the people. And learn to live in amity with all people, the world is shrinking.

Who plundered our wealth for centuries.?It is like appreciating a dacoit who becomes rich with his stolen booty. Even today they are seeking patents for age old Indian scientific practices like Yoga and even some of our traditional medicines. They have no shame in displaying their stolen wealth. But we still have shame in showing our poverty which was their gift to us.
