SINGAKUTTY: Mass masala

Nothing much to say about the story as director A. Venkatesh has made his intentions clear to promote debut hero Sivaji, grandson of thespian Sivaji Ganesan as a full-fledged mass hero. It is evident right from the opening scene that starts with a song and follows with an action scene where the protagonist takes on some anti-social elements and averts danger to a large number of people. Kadhir (Sivaji) after selected as a trainee SI returns to native Madurai not knowing a grave danger awaits him. As he alights the bus, the antagonist gives him instructions through mobile phone that Kadhir has to do from now as per his instructions lest the lives of his lover (Gowri Munjal), mother (Saranya) and sister who are under his captivity are in danger. The thriller elements begins after taking us through a flashback episode, the romance part and the rich girl’s father (Avinash) agreeing for the marriage but Kadhir’s mother temporarily holding back the proposal as she wants her son to join the police department first.
Kadhir does exactly as per the instructions of the villain and even leaves the bag containing a powerful bomb at a temple congregation. He then comes to know bombs were planted by the villain at a few other places too. Kadhir has just 20 minutes to save his dear ones and thousands of people gathered at the temple ceremony. How he accomplishes the feat forms the thrilling climax.

Technical expertise
More than the director’s work it is the stunt directors Kanal Kannan and Anal Arasu who are visible on screen coupled with fast-paced camera work by R. D. Rajasekhar and slick editing by Antony. When they take a brief sabbatical it is the choreographers Tarun Kumar and Brinda who takes over to compose steps for Prasanna Sekhar’s peppy tunes. Their remix number Aattamaa therottamaa particularly is enjoyable. Young Sivaji proved that he has the potential to make it as an action hero with a little bit of care in diction and body language. Gowri Munjal fits the glam bill. Anal Arasu and Guna as the villains bring life into their characters with ease. Vivek’s punch lines are becoming stale and he should look for something new now. Malavika sizzles in a cameo.

Verdict
One star for Sivaji and one for the fight masters.
