




"It is a misconception that poverty is the cause for death of women due to problems arising out of childbirth and pregnancy," the actress said.
"A simple folic acid tablet that costs anywhere between Rs 3-5 can prevent serious problems. The important thing is to ensure that the basic needs of a women are fulfilled," she said.
Measures like providing a woman with an extra meal to ensure healthy nutrition, adequate spacing between two children, and avoiding early marriages can go a long way in saving the mother, she pointed out.
As many as 78,000 women are dying in the country every year due to ignorance, said the actress who is associated with the White Ribbon Alliance of India, a group of organizations behind the 'Million Mums' campaign, launched to mark Safe Motherhood Day.
According to the actress, motherhood has helped her realise the necessities of women needs during pregnancy.
"As a mother of two, I understood that the health of my children is dependent on my health. If the base is not strong ultimately it will affect the mother," she said.
"I started taking vitamins even before I conceived. But everyone is not that lucky. Hence it is important to spread awareness on the issue."
As a part of her campaign, the actress is planning to undertake a lot of field trips and interaction with families on a mass level.
"I have also shot for a short film to promote safe motherhood," she added.
