Worried over the ‘titillating fashion’ in which rape scenes are presented in Bollywood films, Censor Board Chairman Sharmila Tagore has advocated a more sensitive approach towards the issue.

"We are aware that rape scenes are portrayed in a titillating manner in current Bollywood films," Tagore said, adding she ‘regretted’ the trend.

Accepting the fact that the portrayal of woman in today's cinema is not decent, the leading actress of yesteryears said scenes shown on the screen are just a recreation of what happens in our society.

"It is true that the rape scenes are highlighted in the films today, but side by side the stigma is a reality of our society," said Tagore, who started her career 50 years ago.

Advocating stricter laws to bring down cases of sexual assault on women, Tagore urged the whole society to change their mindset about rape victims.

"On the one hand, the victims face mental trauma which persists with them for all their life and on the other they face humiliation from society as well," she said suggesting tough laws which will act as a deterrent for the crime.

Addressing a meet on ‘consultation of guidelines for managing sexual assault’, the actress supported the need of a strong role by the media, especially films, to change the overall approach of people in society.
