“It’s going to be my only film this year. So it’s crucial for me,” says Mukerji, who otherwise prefers to stay away from the public eye. “It isn’t a conscious decision to work less. I don’t like what is being offered to me; often projects become repetitive.”
Last year, both of Mukerji’s releases — Ta Ra Rum Pum and Laaga Chunari... — were for Yash Raj. Her exclusivity with the production house continues, as she has signed her next film — Anurag Singh’s untitled venture opposite Shahid Kapoor — for them. “At present, I am not doing any more films for any other production house. I can’t decide multiple projects at the same time,” she says.
But not too long ago, Mukerji preferred things differently. Black, Bunty Aur Babli, Paheli and The Rising: Ballad of Mangal Pandey were released in 2005, and Yuva, Hum Tum and Veer Zaara in 2004. “The number varies each year,” she says.
Mukerji was in the news not just for her rumoured secret marriage to the new Yash Raj head Aditya Chopra but also for her new bungalow. “It took three years for our new home to be ready. It is the home of my dreams and my gift to my parents. It is Krishna Dham,” says Mukerji, who is known to have her mom Krishna constantly escorting her at dos. But Mukerji is waiting for something else: “It feels great when one’s films do well. But for me the greatest satisfaction will be when roles will be written for me.”
