Kamran candidly admits he got lucky with Satya, which was offered to him right after graduating. “Satya was sudden and a success. The work came in, but I was bidding my time to make my own film. After Masti, I chose not to work as a cinematographer anymore,” says Kamran who then donned the director’s gloves for his first feature film, titled Mohandas.
Based on a novella of the same name by Hindi writer Uday Prakash, the film is about Mohandas (played by Nakul Vaid) who applies for a job at Oriental Coal Mines in Anuppur, Madhya Pradesh but as soon as he joins, things begin to go wrong. Suddenly, Meghna Sengupta, a correspondent working at a news channel in New Delhi, receives a videotape from remote Anuppur: Of a battered man claiming to be Mohandas, alleging that someone has stolen his identity.
Intrigued by the strange tape, Sengupta (played by Sonali Kulkarni) decides to investigate. “As the mystery unravels, I wanted to show the tapestry of contemporary Indian society unfold with all its bizarre ills and contradictions,” says Kamran who reworked certain parts of the original story to make it more contemporary. Making his first film hasn’t been a breeze but Kamran is optimistic: “The producers came in because of the script, so did the actors. I’m sure the audience will come to watch this movie for the same reason as well.” Bravo.
