Kamal Sabri’s Sarangi Funk
Sarangi exponent Kamal Sabri, son of sarangi legend Ustad Sabri Khan, has come up with his album Sarangi Funk on Music Today. The album is a bold and innovative attempt to exhibit an untapped aspect of the sarangi with a mix of jazz, folk and Western.
The sarangi has the rare versatility of suiting diverse musical forms like dhrupad, dhamar, khayal, thumri, dadra, kajri, chaiti, tappa, titivat, tarana, bhajan, ghazal, light and heavy classical and folk and film songs and lately has even dared to venture into jazz, contemporary and new-age music.
The myth that it is associated only with a sad mood persists despite this and Kamal Sabri has attempted to break it. Kamal hails from the Senia gharana (of Rampur) of Moradabad and was initiated into the sarangi from the age of five by his father.
