Move over Singh, Rafi is still King, the Rafi lovers seemed to say at Bangalore’s Chowdiah Memorial on August 17 when a full house of audience members from the ages of 16 to 76 applauded more than 30 Rafi gems - one of them in Kannada - sung by Shrikant Narayan, Gaurav Bangia and others.

The curtain-raiser song from Dil Ek Mandir, Jaanewale kabhi nahi aate was an apt beginning that brought tears to many including the special invitees Tasneem Firoz Ahmed and Abdhur Rehman, granddaughter and grandson to Rafi respectively, who graced the occasion.

O door ke musafir (Uran Khatola), Hui shaam unka khayaal (Mere Humdum Mere Dost), Na na tauba tauba (Aar Paar), Aaj kal tere mere pyar ke charche (Brahmachari), O haseena zulfonwali (Teesri Manzil), Dil tera diwana (Dil Tera Diwana) and duets like Love Marriage’s Dheere dheere chal, Kashmir Ki Kali’s Diwana hua badal, Ek Musafir Ek Hasina’s Aap yun hi agar, Kala Pani’s Acchaji main haari, Abhimaan’s Teri bindiya re and Suvarna Sundari’s Kuhu kuhu bole koyaliya all hit the right chords.

Rafi’s sentimental serenade in Kannada Ne nelli nadave doora was a pleasant surprise by Shrikant followed by the Guide classic Din dhal jaaye and Suraj’s most popular hit Baharon phool barsao.
The background and chorus was very near the original, which is unheard of in most live shows. Rarely seen and heard instruments like the accordion, sitar, mandolin and saxophone were also used.
The finale included Dard-e-dil from Karz, Kar chale hum fida from Haqeeqat to Yeh ishq ishq hai (Barsat Ki Raat) and the concluding medley of the Punjabi folk of O.P.Nayyar from CID, Tumsa Nahin Dekha and Naya Daur. The Baar Baar Rafi Fan Club has carved out a niche in the city and hopes to create a young generation of music lovers that will continue to perpetuate the Rafi Magic.

Jagjit releases Jalota album
Anup Jalota’s Nayee Bhajan Sandhya was released on August 18 at Mumbai’s ISKCON Temple by Jagjit Singh. Anuradha Paudwal attended the function as a chief guest. Many more celebrities also attended the function like Kiran More and his wife Raavi, Madhushree, Sapna Mukherjee, Talat Aziz, Altaf Raja, Sapna Awasthi, Bali Bramhabhatt, Jaswant Singh, Ananth Narayan Mahadevan, Champak Jain, Ramesh Jain and Girish Jain of Venus Records, Kavi Narayan Agarwal and Surdasji of ISKCON. On the occasion, Venus also awarded a Triple Platinum Disc to Anup Jalota and Pt. Kiran Mishra for Ramayan (a set of 20 cassettes), a Platinum disc for Bhagwad Gita (a set of 18 Cassettes) and a pre-sale Gold Disc for Nayee Bhajan Sandhya.
