The 75-year-old director made his plans clear in legal papers filed in court yesterday where he is trying to dismiss a three-decade-old criminal case where he had pleaded guilty to having unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl.
Polanski's lawyer Chad Hummel, said in the document that Polanski's court battle is motivated by a desire to leave a legacy of justice.
"Polanski has no plans ever to return to the United States. But the course of what happens here will have an enduring legacy for the justice system," said the legal statement. It argued that "dismissal of the 1977 rape case would show that judicial and prosecutorial misconduct cannot go unpunished".
Polanski who won an Academy Award for Best Director in 2002 for his drama 'The Pianist' lives in France and cannot return to the US for a January 21 hearing of the case without risking arrest.
He also cannot travel outside France because of the arrest warrant which dates back to 1977.
