Perumal
Perumal is one of those films that leave you not only exhausted but confused as well. The story begins from where a young Christian spice-seller and an heiress to a royal Hindu family elope, overcoming the opposition from the girl’s father. And then years later, we see them living happily, now turned rich and influential. The spice seller Mathai, is now known as Kalappurackal Mathai (Madhu) and his wife, earlier known as Lakshmikutty, is now known as Achamma (Seema). They have two sons, Job (Babu Antony) and Jose (Riyaz Khan). Job is married and helps his father in his business while Jose is in love with Sreekutty (Lakshmi Sharma), a poor girl. In the meantime, Mathai and his family find strong opponents in the two brothers-in-law of Pathrose (Chali Pala), who is not just a well-wisher, but Mathai’s staff too. Then follows a whole lot of plotting, series of murders etc, finally culminating in a bit of revenge taking and bringing the real culprits to book. So what’s new?

Technical Expertise
Madhu and Seema are good as Mathai and Achamma, but Babu Antony has nothing to do as Job. Riyaz Khan is his usual self as Jose while Kalasala Babu is good as one of the villains. The comedy part involving Jagathy Sreekumar and Kalpana seems to have been deliberately put in. The others in the cast don’t even deserve mention. Technically, the film is just so-so, with songs that don’t make an impact at all. The scriptwriter and the director have to take the blame for the making of this film, which is a poor show.
Verdict
Just one star, for Madhu and Seema.
