Love aaj kalSaif Ali Khan addressed the media at the Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara, Dadar.
With his film Love Aaj Kal set to be released on Friday, actor Saif Ali Khan has apologised to the Sikh community. In a bid to clear the controversy regarding his portrayal of a Sikh in the film, the actor — along with director Imtiaz Ali — addressed the media at the Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara, Dadar, on Wednesday.

Khan apologised to the community via a letter to The Punjab Cultural and Heritage Board and also agreed to cut an objectionable scene from the movie. The members of The Punjab Cultural and Heritage board had requested to watch the movie 15 days ago to make sure that there was no wrong representation of the Sikh community in it. After watching the movie, they had three major issues: The length of Khan’s beard, a scene at a gurdwara and a joke about a sardar.

Khan, who is also the producer of the film along with Dinesh Vijan, was told to make immediate amendments be0ore releasing the movie. “I completely understand and respect the problems they had. We don’t want to hurt any sentiments and took the issues seriously,” says the actor who plays a young Sikh in the film.

Khan personally wrote an apology letter, in which he promised that he will never make the mistake of representing the community in a wrong way again. Director Ali also cut 15 seconds of the film with which the board had an issue. “It was a scene in a gurdwarawhere there was some romance between the hero and heroine. The gurudwara cannot be portrayed as a place where you can romance so we asked him to cut that scene,” says Charan Singh Sapra, representative of The Punjab Cultural and Heritage Board.

There was a joke in which Khan starts off with “there was once a sardar”; this has now been changed to “there was once a man.”

The committee has given a go-ahead to the movie after the changes, but has warned film-makers that they will protest if anything on these lines is ever repeated. “We had accepted a written apology from Akshay Kumar after Singh is Kinng and now we are doing the same from Saif. This is the last time we are agreeing with just an apology and will not tolerate anything like this again,” says Sapra.

He adds that if anyone was planning a film representing the Sikh community, they will be more than happy to offer them free guidance so that the clothes, language and culture are shown correctly.

Khan is definitely a relieved producer and is very happy with the result of the film, even with the changes. “My Sikh character is the most noble, cool and romantic Sikh there has ever been,” he says confidently.

please don't talk when you don't know what to talk by Harkawalpreet singh on 2009-07-31 15:53:34.695772+05:30 Sikh is made out of love, to love. Sikhism is not a caste but is the teaching in itself. those who are commenting here about sikhism does not know the ABC of sikhism. Just put in your head in yourself and see can you comment about such a thought . it is just like a frog commenting about the ocean. Those, who does not know the meaning of the of there names even, are commenting about such an ocean of thought. the thought which is brought by GURU NANAK. i dont know from where you all got the courage of commenting on religion and the religion which is SIKH. Please dont talk when you dont know what to talk. it can hurt somebody. It can give pain to somebody who is religious.

Publicity by Ashok on 2009-07-31 10:11:47.733145+05:30 Old dog's trick. Do something controversial, then apologize,in the process gain tons of publicity. Why does media fall for it? Big question, why does public? Why not avoid movies of actors who manipulate all the time?

Adapt to the changed realties or get extinct, painfully by jas on 2009-07-31 09:34:39.379758+05:30 I wonder if these so called leaders of Sikhs have patents on the beard of all Sikhs and Sikh-looking people? I as a person who supported long hair for 27 years of his life, would like to suggest to all 'traditional Sikhs' to get their hair cut for once at least. If you don't like it then you can grow them back any time. Do this just to excercise your option as a free man. These so called symbols of Sikhism have become shakles that have been limiting our choices for no good reasons and are hampering the spread of Sikhism as a religion and philosophy. Believe me you come across as a bigoted man who is slave to religious customs and convetions. This prejudices most people's judgement of you even before you talk. And you know what people say about the first impression? Staying in military uniform prescribed centuries ago cannot serve any good purpose and it is not. I love to wear turban but I would not let anybody to make it must for me for religious reasons. You can have that choice too.

Power and position humgary religious heads wont let people come out of these premitive shackles, else they will lose all they got so cheap. Look at the politics prevelent at all religious places. Hyper-sensitivity of religious idiots is even more sickening by Jas on 2009-07-31 08:30:25.110351+05:30 People depicting Sikhs as jokers and bufoons and people telling sick jokes about Sikhs are disgustingly stupid people who try to be funny. I am eually disgusted by the Sikhs who have been defining Sikhs and Sikhism in ever increasingly narrower terms. These bigoted idiots have reduced the beautiful philosopy of Guru Nanak to some outward symbols of facial hairs and turbans only. Such people have monopolized the Gurdawras and would not allow other Sikhs who refuse to be defined by unshorn hairs to have any say in Sikh affairs. The fact that majority of their own sons are not keeping long hair and vast majority of their daughters do not want to marry 'tradition sikhs' does not seem to put some compromising sense in their stuborn and stupid heads. Instead these so called Sikh religious leaders and some political leaders also keep defining Sikhism like talibans are defining Islams. Why a little (or even for that matter lots) of romance can not happen in Gurdwara. Does God hates love so much

Saif and the Sikhs by Vengrai P. Sarathy on 2009-07-31 03:02:31.238616+05:30 The Censor Board should be able to incorporate members of representative bodies to clear such films and avoid apologies. It looks like all that one has to do is to raise objections as 'offending' some sentiment or other and that becomes a signal for more protests. In this casse the Punjab Cultural Board could have been included by the Board before clearing the movie for release. Vengrai P.Sarathy

Aaaj Kal by Rohit on 2009-07-30 21:27:20.541006+05:30 I am shocked at leaders of our community who make such strong objections to minor things. There is so many other important issues (like poverty, education, Women welfare, child welfare) that needs to be addressed but we tend to focus on minor film issues. Who cares its a film, by no means it represent sikh community world wide. I know lot of sikhs who are very intelligent, hard working and successfull in their lives. People need to move on.

Aaaj Kal by Harinder Singh on 2009-07-30 17:41:45.12911+05:30 Sikh religious body should look after religious matters only and should not comment on length of beard etc. I,however, strongly object to sikhs being presented as bafoons and butt of racial jokes in movies or tv serials.

Gurudwara is supposed to be "Community Centre" by Navjot Parashar on 2009-07-30 16:05:49.965328+05:30 "It's a pitty that beard-man thinks that they are sikh!"I am shocked to read the news about the fuss created for the movie. It seems that "Punjabi-Sardaar" believes that they are the only who are sikhs!"Every Sikh must have a Guru. All the people from Punjab used to visit Gurudwara to resolve their issues and have a public gathering (meetings). Till the time of Guru Arjan Devji, the same purpose was very much served but when the sixth guru militarised the Skhism, it became an army and lost its original touch of accomodating every body.

by Sunny on 2009-07-30 19:55:00.787997+05:30What are you talking about Shyam, all Mr. Khan is trying to do is save his investment, right now his money is invested in this film and he will say sorry to any one and everyone if he has to.... but I do agree with you length of beard is a stupid issue to raise. Also media should stop showing Sikhs like some circus joker and stop these racial jokes.
