It has been a while since Vinay Pathak made us guffaw with his iconic film ‘Bheja Fry’. However, the actor says he has been grappling with being typecast as a comedian and insists that his versatility in front of the camera has yet to be revealed. “Ek Bheja Fry ne mera bheja kharab kar diya (One Bheja Fry has befuddled my brain). And I’ve played many character roles before it,” says Pathak, promoting his latest film ‘Dasvidanya’ (Russian for goodbye) at PVR Select Citywalk.

Wearing aviator shades and dressed in a pair of denims and a crisp blue shirt, Pathak, who is also producing the movie, chats with the media, punctuating his answers with an occasional joke.

‘Dasvidanya’ is about the life of a simpleton, Amar Kaul, played by Pathak, who is told by the doctors that he has only three months to live. So he draws up a things-to-do list for 90 days. “My character looks back at life and sees that he hasn’t done anything special. Nothing exciting has ever happened to him. So in the last three months he decides to make up for those lost years,” says Pathak, who wears a sombre look in the film.

The script, though, is eerily similar to the 2007 Hollywood flick ‘The Bucket List’, starring Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson. But Pathak is quick to deny this. “It’s very different,” he insists. “Kaul is an ordinary person who has to deal with unexpected news.” The film also stars the hit duo of Ranvir Shorey and Rajat Kapur but only because they are the most appropriate for the script, says Pathak.

This might be his first film as producer but Pathak has been producing TV serials for the last four years. He will next be seen in SRK and ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’.
