"No politics for me till the next 10 years. I think I have another 10 years to go in acting and I have to pursue that. Maybe later, I may take to politics," said Dutt who had previously expressed his desire to join politics to complete the unfinished work of his late father actor-politician Sunil Dutt.
The actor was accompanied by wife Manyata at an event in New Delhi where Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh was also present.
Singh, who is associated closely with superstar Amitabh Bachchan and his family, had met Dutt immediately after his release from jail early 2008 triggering speculation that he may join politics.
Responding to a query about his father's legacy, the actor said, "I would love to serve my country but it is not necessary to do that by being associated with any kind of political party.”
"I can do so without that and I have been doing it -- like I do a lot for cancer patients and street children who are on drugs and other things."
Manyata however disagreed with her husband and expressed her wish to see him in politics.
The actor also clarified that as reported in the media there was no rivalry with sister Priya Dutt on the issue of taking over their legacy after he passed away in 2005.
"There is no truth in it. I was never interested in it and my father passed away suddenly. Somebody from the family had to take that seat and Priya had done so much social work and travelled with father, I thought she would be best for it," the actor added.
"It was a decision made by all of us. I am basically from the heart and not the mind - so politics basically doesn’t go with me. There was no fight. Though she didn't want to join, but she got into it and she won. My father’s legacy had to go on," Dutt said.
