With offbeat or modest films running riot this year, we saw kiddies-oriented films of assorted shapes and sizes like Chal Chalein, Zor Lagaake...Haiya!, Bal Ganesh 2, Detective Naani and Aamras (strictly speaking this was about teenage schoolgirls). On November 13, Children’s Day eve, Aao Wish Karein hit the screen - but the film wasn’t exactly children’s material. Aladin, released a couple of weeks earlier, had the same problem - the contemporary version of the old tale lacked the simplicity needed to connect with the children.
And so, despite some light numbers like Genie rap and Tak dhina dhin, the music too did not connect. The same was true of all other films - their music failed to give melodies that attracted kids the way songs like Bam bam bole (Taare Zameen Par) did as late as 2007. Forget the many children’s classics that came in the olden days, in this year we did not have a single memorable song in so many films that were essentially about children.
