Gayaki
In collaboration with the Mariwala, Kilachand Devchand, Saroj Jhaveri and Jasubhai Foundations, NCPA celebrated Gharana Gaayaki on September 11 and 12.
In Hindustani music gharanas are identified by their own distinct styles resulting from specialisation with respect to the emotional content (ras), voice production and the specific techniques used for unfolding the raag.

Four eminent exponents of gharanedaar music presented the vast and rich musical legacy of their gaayakis, enabling the listener to appreciate the aesthetics of each style. Ashwini Bhide and Ajoy Chakraborty performed on September 11. Ashwini Bhide represents the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana. Her raag delineation is characterised by a meticulous building-architecture of the raag. Her repertoire includes rare and complex (achhop) raags, characteristic of this gharana. Ajoy Chakraborty represents the Patiala gharana, having an exceedingly appealing and colourful musical style. His khayal elaboration is marked with extensive ornamentation, sargam and attractive taan patterns. Ramakant and Umakant Gundecha and Ulhas Kashalkar performed on September 12. As leading exponents of the Dagarbani dhrupad gaayaki, Umakant and Ramakant Gundecha presented a full-fledged dhrupad recital. Ulhas Kashalkar’s music reflects a harmonious blend of the Gwalior, Agra and Jaipur traditions. His style reveals a balance of the musical content and the expression, presented in a mature manner.
