A critic of the award-winning movie ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ has named stray dogs after those involved in the film to protest against the title.

Nicholas Almeida, a social activist and slum dweller himself, has filed a complaint in a local court against director Danny Boyle, producer Christian Colson and the distributor, saying the film's title was damaging and discriminating.

The movie, shot largely in a Mumbai slum, charts the rags to riches tale of a mendicant boy who wins a fortune on a quiz show.

"When the British ruled India, they called Indians 'dogs'. Why do we want to call these poor children 'dogs' 60 years after we got independence?" Almeida, an elected member of the city civic body who lives in a suburban slum, told Reporters.

Almeida said he would continue to press for the movie's title to be changed, but has meanwhile held a naming ceremony for stray dogs in the slum to publicise his cause.

"I have named them Danny, Christian, Loveleen, Dev and Freida," he said, referring to the director, producer, co-director Loveleen Tandan, star Dev Patel and leading lady Freida Pinto.

Canines in slums by richard on 2009-01-29 05:54:00.395047+05:30 One more offensive word is created now. So we cannot call a dog a dog. What difference a name makes, when we are all treated like dogs if we do not have, wealth, power and position? So many girls call me a Slum dog because I follow them. Nobody has taken up my case in HC.

what' wrong with a dog by RAJK on 2009-01-28 21:41:25.756182+05:30 Even Yudhistra in mahabharata did not leave the dog.why should these 'critics' feel bad about. Dogs are more faithful than men. after all it is the only animal when reversed becomes "GOD". I think there are better issues to work for Almeida and co.

Why Dog? by subburaj on 2009-01-28 15:12:24.42563+05:30 The word 'Dog" is not acceptable. I don not understand, on what sense this has been included but definitely offensive/discrminative one. They can change it to 'SLUM MILLIONNAIRE' or 'SLUMDWEL MILLIONNAIRE'. But not the world 'Dog'. Will the West accept , if we use 'West Dog Millionnaire"
