Mumbai girl Maya Suryavanshi was recently signed to do a Bengali film produced by one of Bangla’s corporate house, Channel 8. The untitled film is to be directed by Hindi film director Vinod Chhabra whose last film My Husband’s Wife will release soon. The shooting will commence soon in Malaysia.

Trained under Kishore Namit Kapoor Acting School, Maya has some print ads like Reliance, ICICI, Prudential, Kalazone Sarees, Mr. and Mrs. Black hair Colour and TV commercials like Max New York life. She acted in TV serials like Shh... Phir Koi Hai and Jai Ma Durga.

Trilingual media company
A new media company — Backwater Media & Entertainment, aiming to be a one-of-the-kind production house with state-of-the-art technology, technicians and talent to create world-class cinema in three South Indian languages — Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu, was launched in Kochi on April 29.
The Kochi-based company aims to excel in cinema production, distribution, promotion, sales, TV software, events and commercials, Vijay Babu, chief architect of the company and Mohan Lal P Menon, a director board member, told reporters. It will also be involved in promoting new talent in south Indian films.
Mohan Lal said big names in Indian cinema like directors Joshi, Fazil, Shaji Kailas and A. K. Sajan are part of the advisory board.
Producing cinemas in Malayalam will form the bedrock of Backwater’s business and its total solutions package is expected to strengthen Malayalam cinema industry, he said. The company also aims at providing assistance with regard to satellite exploration, overseas rights, brand marketing in rest of the country and abroad.
There were also plans to undertake television commercial and music video works, creation of entertainment software for television channels and events and launch a full-fledged studio in a phased manner which is expected to be completed in the next 12 months. The studio will have world-class facilities for editing, graphics, dubbing, mixing, Mohan Lal said. It plans to complete three to four films by September or October this year.

Veteran actor Balajee dead
K Balajee, who had essayed roles of hero as well as villain with equal aplomb and was a contemporary of legendary South Indian actors Sivaji Ganesan and Gemini Ganesan, died on May 2 in Chennai after a brief illness. Seventy-four-year-old Balajee was admitted to the Apollo Hospital last month for kidney failure. Balajee also produced a number of films and had done brilliant roles, including that of an educated brother of an illiterate Sivaji Ganesan in Padithaal Mattum Podhumaa.
Balajee, the father-in-law of Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, is survived by a son and two daughters. Balajee, who has acted in more than 150 films, made his debut as an actor in Avaiyar produced by Gemini productions in 1950.
Some of the well-remembered roles essayed by him include Singapuram Minor in Thillana Mohanambal, and as a friend of Sivaji Ganesan in Vasantha Maaligai. He started his film production company Sujata Cinearts in 1965 and produced over 70 films including the Sivaji Ganesan-Jayalalitha starrer Engirunthu Vanthan and Rajinikanth’s Billa, which made it big at the box-office. He had received many honours, including the Kalairamani award by the Tamil Nadu Eyal Isai Nadaga Mandram (Lalit Kala Academy) and best film producer award instituted by the Tamil Nadu government.
