She’s not an Indian citizen, neither does she speak Hindi, but former Miss Sri Lanka, Jacqueline Fernandez, already has two films in her pocket. The 5’6” stunner is set to carve a niche for herself as an actor with Sujoy Ghosh’s Aladdin. But, she is not allowed to speak about her role or the film and has to be content waiting for the film to release sometime early next year. “I do get restless at times since I am dying to see the audience reaction of my work, but I guess that will have to wait,’ says Jackie, as she is called.
Born in Sri Lanka but brought up in Bahrain, when her family shifted there, Jacqueline always wanted to become an actress. Not a Bollywood actress, because she had never been exposed to Hindi films, but a Hollywood actress! Though the idea started looking a little far-fetched to her when she entered her teens, things started falling in place when Jackie won the Miss Sri Lanka title. Soon after she came to Mumbai to explore her chances of a career in Bollywood. Jacqueline enrolled herself with a management agency to get her work, did an acting course with Barry John, learnt Kathak from Gopi Krishan and made friends to get a feel of Indian culture. “I did not mind starting out with Hindi films as Bollywood cinema is booming and is also recognised at an international level today. Working in a Hindi film was like a stepping- stone to realise my Hollywood dreams,” she says dreamily.
She was one of the several who were auditioned for Aladdin and despite the fact that she did not know Hindi it was her exotic looks which got her a role in the film. “The last one year has been amazing with lessons in dialogue delivery, shootings, meeting people, observing Indian people’s gestures and expressions to get her characters right. Getting a Hindi film like Aladdin and emoting in front of the camera was one big learning experience!” she smiles.
The beauty soon overcame her drawbacks of not being an Indian and not knowing Hindi and landed her second film. Milap Zaveri’s debutant directorial venture Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai with Riteish Desmukh is the film for which she is shooting . She plays an alien searching love from an earthling, a role which was to be originally played by Ayesha Takia. “Ayesha couldn’t do the film because of date problems and I got the part,” she says, visibly excited.
Though she has many good friends in the industry including Vivek Oberoi who she met at for an event and Riteish Deshmukh with who she has worked in two films, Jackie admits that she is an introvert. She says that it is a challenge to play emotional scenes in which she has to emote, as in real life she hides her feelings and finds it difficult to express them. “I would also like to do comic roles as well,” she signs off.
