Miss Universe pageantMiss Universe 2008 Dayana Mendoza places the Miss Universe 2009 crown on Miss Venezuela Stefania Fernandez.
Venezuelan Stefania Fernandez, an 18-year-old brunette, won the Miss Universe 2009 title on Sunday, giving her South American country its second consecutive win and its sixth title in the beauty pageant.

The svelte Venezuelan model defeated favorites from Australia and Dominican Republic to became the 58th winner of the crown in a show broadcast live around the world from the Atlantis, Paradise Island resort in the Bahamas.

The first runner-up was Miss Dominican Republic, Ada Aimee de la Cruz, while Miss Kosovo, Gona Dragusha, was second runner-up.

Fernandez received the crown from fellow Venezuelan Dayana Mendoza, who won the 2008 Miss Universe contest held in Vietnam's resort city of Nha Trang.

Overcome with excitement as the two Venezuelan beauties embraced, Mendoza initially fumbled and dropped the jewell-studded crown before placing it on Fernandez' head.

It was the first time that a contestant from the same country won the title for a second year running.

Oil producer Venezuela is famous for its beauty queens and has accumulated more international beauty pageant titles than any other country. The South American nation had produced five previous Miss Universe winners in 1979, 1981, 1986, 1996 and 2008 and has also won the Miss World contest five times.

Only the United States has won more Miss Universe titles with 7.

Fernandez was selected out of five finalists chosen from a total field of 83 contestants. The other five finalists came from Dominican Republic, Kosovo, Australia and Puerto Rico.

In the deciding questions that preceded the announcement of the winner, Fernandez was asked by a judge what obstacles faced women seeking to become leaders of business corporations.

"We've already reached the same level as men," she replied confidently, speaking through an interpreter.

Before her, 21-year-old Australian model Rachael Finch, who had been widely favored to win the crown, defended the swimsuit parade of the pageant, which has sometimes been criticized by critics of beauty contests.

"I think our bodies are a beautiful part of a women and we should definitely show them to the world," Finch said.

Government officials in the Bahamas, a scattered group of islands and keys southeast of the United States, were hoping that hosting the 2009 Miss Universe pageant would provide a much needed short-term boost to the islands' economy and tourism industry.

Bahamas, like other Caribbean states, has been badly hit by the global economic recession which has reduced visitor arrivals and investment. Bahamas' unemployment rate has nearly doubled in the last year to just over 14 percent in May.

The annual Miss Universe pageant -- which tries to present itself as something more meaningful than a swimwear parade -- was first held in Long Beach, California, in 1952.

The event was taken over in 1996 by US real estate mogul Donald Trump.

We're talking about Venezuela.... by JD on 2009-10-06 11:11:05.589087+05:30 Between Miss Venezuela and Miss DR, I would have picked Venezuela - she answered the question better, and with more confidence. And her looks, IMHO, is better than Miss DR - although she was not my favorite in the Top 5. My favorite was Miss Australia, but she stumbled on the question.Miss Venezuela won fairly and did well in the last round - giving Venezuela a well deserved repeat of the crown.

Ms. by Marlen on 2009-09-07 01:49:04.746272+05:30 I too believe the the competion was a fraud. I've always watched The competition but I must admit that this year was quite a dissapointment.I think ms. Dominican Republic should have won the competition. She had more presence and beauty. She responded intellligently to the final question. In conclusion, Ms. Dominican Republic was robbed of the title.

It's just fair by jay on 2009-09-04 09:21:44.916031+05:30 So if Venezuela wins MU two years in a row, it is fraud, but if Miss India does the same in MW then it's because they're so pretty. Give me a break.

disappointment by willie on 2009-08-26 14:51:24.815906+05:30 i jus have a question: wasnt miss dominican republic better than miss venezuela?? she clearly got higher scores than miss venezuela, she was prettier and elegant, and she answered her question better than miss venezuela. I also believe that some asian countries should have been in the top 15 and i'm not saying that because i'm asian. I'm dominican. Me being dominican does not influence the reason why miss dominican republic should have won. Any contestant that had the grace, the charisma, and the elegance of miss dominican also deserved the crown. I would be equally disappointed if it was another country, whose crown got taken away from. Miss venezuela does not deserve to be miss universe.

MISS UNIVERSE 2009 by MARIA on 2009-08-25 13:08:46.202372+05:30 AS EXPECTED, ANOTHER ARTIFICIALLY ENHANCED BEAUTY FROM VENEZUELA WON THE MISS UNIVERSE PAGEANT. SHE DOESN'T EVEN SPEAK ENGLISH AND WASN'T ABLE TO ANSWER THE QUESTION CORRECTLY. APPARENTLY, THERE'S OBVIOUS DISCRIMINATION OF NATURAL BEAUTIES COMING FROM ASIA. THESE GIRLS WERE JUST WASTING THEIR TIME AND MONEY!

Miss Universe---- by romesh.sharma on 2009-08-24 23:28:15.861505+05:30 It was couple of days before when I saw Ekta Chowdhry's photo and was surprised that how could she be chosen/entitled Miss India.Just look at her face it looks as if it had been kept in some rectangular mettalic case and pressed for years. That attraction/fascination what a young woman should have is just not there. One could grade her as a third class model for tooth-paste or something like that.True, its scandalous.

But PLEASE can't you find better performers than one that can't keep his hand off of his crotch...........how disgusting. These girls are all wonderful and they deserve a better stage presence than a crotch grabber. Think about it..............

1 POLITICAL MISS INDIA
by Rana on 2009-08-24 19:59:40.922286+05:30Why. Is it a fraud 'cause our Miss India, the grand-daughter of Mr Bhram Prakash Chowdhry, the first CM of Delhi (this is what the Wikipedia informs you), this is what is going to happen. There is no dearth of beautiful and intelligent girls in India, who would beat any beautiful girl the world over in both beauty and intellignence. But if you have political apointees as Miss Indias, then they are not there to win the Miss Universe/World or Asia crowns. This is probably the first time in many years when we did not have a Miss India win any minor prizes also.
