In Bollywood, it is common knowledge that actor Aamir Khan shuns awards functions, even ones where he is to receive the award.

Maharashtra Government is hoping that Aamir makes an exception for the Maharashtra State Awards ceremony to be held Pune on May 30.

Maharashtra Government plans to present the Raj Kapoor Lifetime Achievement Award to actress Rekha and honour Aamir with the Raj Kapoor Memorial Award for Special Contribution.

The actor has given his consent to the award but has conveyed to us that he has film shooting commitments for May 30, a senior State Government official said.

"Rekha has assured us that she would be present at the awards nite and we are keeping our fingers crossed that Aamir attends," the official said.

The V Shantaram Award, instituted by Maharashtra Government, would be presented to veteran lyricist Jagdish Khebudkar and actor-director Mahesh Kothare.

Each award comprises of Rs 2 lakhs, a citation and a memento.

The Shantaram Awards are presented to those who have made a mark in the Marathi film industry, while the Raj Kapoor Awards honour achievers from the Hindi film industry.

Minister for cultural affairs Harshvardhan Patil said the ministry has also decided to felicitate recipients of the Padma awards this year who belong to the film industry, including singers Udit Narayan, Kumar Sanu and Shamshad Begum and music director Pandit Hridaynath Mangeshkar.

There are also plans to felicitate the stars of the Oscar-winning film 'Slumdog Millionaire' and double Oscar winner music director A R Rahman has also been invited, the official said.

Amir should attend and receive the award by Regi on 2009-05-21 10:40:27.944913+05:30 Few years back i think in 2000 or 2002 ,amir khan was declared as best actor in a award function,i think its is lux or zee i could not recollect it from my memory and sridevi is supposed to give the award. After the announcement came everybody and sridevi hoped that amir will come and take the award. But he was not present for the function .I cannot forget the face expression of sridevi in that function.Definitely it is bad feeling .So this should not repeat . Amir khan should attend the function and receive it . Definetly this is good honour to you.and the whole country is happy to see that moments .

He can spare sometime as pune is just 3 hour from mumbai if he is shooting in mumbai and not than he can always take a flight from whereever he is after all it is a prstigious government award not any tom, dick and harry award function.Aamir please go

Aamir should make time to attend award function by Lalitha.S on 2009-05-20 12:17:20.400657+05:30 As a fan and well-wisher of Aamir, I feel that Aamir should be wise enough to attend this award function. It is a prestigious award given by the govt of the state he was born and brought up in---and he should honour and respect the award committee that is honouring him. Whatever his commitmtnt, Aamir could plan and and attend function. Please Aamir, do the right thing.This is not some film magazine award for you to brush aside.
