Love Aaj Kal is an amalgamation of two love stories spanning two different eras. The first story is about Veer Singh and Harleen. It is love at first for Veer when he sees Harleen and soon after that he swears that he will marry her. He travels a thousand kilometers just to have a glimpse of her face and yet not speak a word with her. The second story is about Jai and Meera, a modern-day couple in London. They are very happy together but do not believe in tying each other down. When life pulls them in different directions, they decide to go with the flow. As both stories unfold, the protagonists realise that the process of relationship might be different in different eras, but the experience of being in love remains the same. The fondness between two people keeps increasing along with the distance.
There is no particular reason why a movie is made. I think it is just for fun - for the people who make it and hopefully also for the ones who see it. This one began in the usual way - incidents that I had seen were working in my mind, becoming bigger and tipping over from real to imagination, and then joining together to make a mass that was ready to be exorcised. Most of the writing happened on-flights - between London, Delhi and San Francisco. Thank god for those long-distances, else the script would never have been ready on time. Making this movie has felt like being in a moving caravan - a circus- that travels from place to place, opens its wares and performs the show, then folds up, waves good-bye as it moves to the next shore, the next group of prospective friends. Love Aaj Kal has its form, its personality. And its destiny. It will always be special to me because it’s the place where Jai and Meera live.
THE BUZZ
Except for Saif and Deepika, the film required a few more girls to play Saif’s love-interests in the film. The San Francisco schedule had begun but the crew still hadn’t cast anybody. Finally the crew hit the streets in search of finding the perfect girls.
