Comedy Circus
10 pm, Saturday, Sony
Comedy Circus began its third season. The makers have therefore given it a teen ka tadka as a neat mix of stand up comedians and TV actors regale viewers in trios. The interesting bit about Comedy Circus is it gives a chance to our prime time actors to let loose and discover their funny bone.
While some are inherently funny and have already established themselves as comic actors (read Swapnil Joshi, Ali Asgar and Purbi Joshi), the others gradually discover their ha-ha side like a Shweta Tiwari who makes for an attractive stand-up comedy actress or someone like a Harsh Chhaya or an Anoop Soni, known mainly for their serious, intense portrayals surprising the audience with their impeccable comic timing.

While Shekhar Suman and Archana Puran Singh have been constant fixtures on the judges’ chairs, this time around, the makers (Optimystix) have roped in current flavour, director Rohit Shetty in place of Suman. The show works like any other contest with each trio performing an act on a given theme like ‘Jungle’ or ‘Bollywood’ and then the judges rate them out of 10. At the end of all the performances, the judges eliminate one of the three lowest scoring tigdis. So at the time of writing, Parul Chauhan, Bhagwant Mann and Jennifer Winget were eliminated.

Any good stand-up comedy show relies on two things: a fool proof, complete script which rises above the usual punches and not just a string of smart lines and two, actors who have a good comic timing. So naturally then both these factors combine to give a great performance like the one which had stand-up comedian, Bharati, Sharad Kelkar (he is not just another good looking actor) and Paresh Ganatra doing a super act on the Jungle theme. Absolutely paisa vasool.
Also ready to fire are Harsh, Bhairavi Raichura and Anoop. Saloni, the child star though needs to be controlled as her bai act can get grating!

As for the judges, Archana continues to be the ha-ha queen while Rohit is soft spoken yet speaks his mind whenever the situation demands. Not one to mince words, the All The Best director is a pleasant replacement to Suman though one can’t say the same thing about host Mouni Roy. But then in a show like Comedy Circus, hosts have hardly anything to do except just sit in a corner and grin and ‘bare’ it.
Verdict:
Watch it. Exercise your funny bone.
