Avantika (Kareena Kapoor) is a professor at Delhi University. She has come to Delhi from New York to tend to her ailing father, who suffered a heart attack. During her stint at Delhi University, Avantika meets Ehsaan Khan, a temporary professor who has recently joined the faculty. They eventually fall in love. Everything is picture-perfect until one day she receives a call from the University in New York. She is informed that she has been called back. Ehsaan is game and assures her that he will come with her to New York, provided they get married. In New York they start a new life, right from buying a house in an Indian neighbourhood to making new friends. Their neighbours Hamid and Anjum, a conservative Muslim couple, invite them for dinner. Life takes a steep turn after that particular night when Salma, a woman she met during dinner, tells Avantika that her, Salma’s, life is in great danger. Avantika tries to help Salma but ends up falling into grave trouble.

now that the film is up for release, I am a little numb. There is so much happening around that there is hardly any time to be nervous or excited. Karan Johar told me the story one night and I decided that I would make a film. Quite frankly, I was really apprehensive because it is nerve-wracking when you are directing a film and not just writing it. I never liked any of my stories and luckily Karan gave me this story. Kurbaan is a love story and a thriller and also makes a very strong political comment. It has a very interesting storyline that deals with Islam and terrorism. To be frank, I am really not worrried of the commercial consequences because I have put my heart and soul into this film.
