“Bahut ho gaya, chaddo tussi. Thankfully I am no longer playing the character of a Punjabi woman. I think it’s time I started exploring other roles,” chuckles actor Kirron Kher, 53, who plays a Bengali character in her latest movie, the delightfully titled Saas Bahu Aur Sensex. Kher along with co-star Masumeh Makhija and director Shona Urvashi (of Chup Ke Se fame in 2003) dropped by at Spice World on Thursday for the premiere of their film. The plot is based on middle class aspirations juxtaposed against the regular fluctuations in the Stock market. The star cast may not be too impressive, but there is consolation since it is the first Hindi film Warner Brothers is representing in India.

Kher plays a middle class woman, Binita Sen, from Kolkata who lives in a Mumbai neighbourhood with her daughter played by Tanushree Dutta. She wants to start life afresh but she lives in a flat with saas bahu serials obsessed women. So is she a fan of the Kyunkis? “No way. There is already so much drama in real life,” smiles Kher. The stock market angle is provided by veteran actor Farooque Shaikh, who is a broker in the film and educates Kher on the stock market. “I am clueless about the stock market. I keep away from such things. Working with Farooque was a pleasure since he is a complete ladies man,” says Kher. Will it work? It just might, considering Bollywood can be as unpredictable as the Sensex.
