Creative Quotient
A mad comedy is always an uneasy premise for a critic to deal with. So is the case with Kambakkht Ishq. It is a breezy comedy on the whole but it is laced with several objectionable scenes and lines. To put it in a nutshell, it’s not a film you will be comfortable watching with your children. Simrita (Kareena) is a trainee doctor, who moonlights as a model while Viraj (Akshay) is a daredevil stuntman who doubles up for none less than the Superman and Rambo. The two land up at a church, up in arms against their respective buddies - Lucky (Aftab) and Kamini (Amrita Arora) tying the knot. What follows is a big battle between the fair maidens and the strong men. The proceedings start and end with lip-locks.
How Simrita ends up dropping her musical watch in Viraj’s abdomen during an operation and it chimes ‘ Om mangalam mangalam’ every hour makes for some hilarious moments. Mentionworthy is the awards ceremony in Hollywood where the watch goes off right in the middle of Akshay’s acceptance speech and as he drops the mike to his belly - the mangalam chime inspires the entire gathering to stand up in respect. The dialogues are mostly ribtickling, if only they had gone slow on the “dog-bitch” banter.
It is a funny enterprise replete with objectionable scenes like the viagra overdose!
Technical Expertise
Director Sabbir Khan is well in command of his subject, situations and stars. The narrative has an easy flow to it. The writers are the culprits here as they bung in some crass scenes that were easily avoidable - especially the derriere search at the airport!! Akshay Kumar delivers a heartfelt, sincere performance, he’s just so convincing in every scene - from the ragging ones to the mushy romantic ones, he delivers the goods. On the other hand, Kareena is the goods herself. She looks dazzlingly glamorous and plays her part so well. Often her glamour eclipses her histrionics. In the seductive number Bebo main Bebo she’s at her alluring and vulnerable best.
Sylvester Stallone has an engaging guest appearance with a spectacular action scene thrown in. Denise Richards looks sadly out of place and she doesn’t have a flattering role either. She loses out totally to Kareena. Brandon Routh plays himself in two scenes. But Vindoo Dara Singh and Jaaved Jaaferi look too outmoded. The action director trio Spiro Razzatos, Franco Solman and Mahindar Verma serve up some breathtaking stunts. Salim Sulaiman’s background music enhances the thrill of the scenes while Anu Malik’s music is easy on the ear. Vaibhavi Merchant’s choreography deserves a special mention - it is really invigorating. Nitin Rokade’s edit is crisp and smart.
It’s a rollicking guffawthon.
Verdict
Three stars - one each for Akshay’s sincere act, Kareena’s dazzling presence and the easy laughs that pepper the proceedings.
