Real-life blues

Producer: Sandiip Kapur Director: Anand Kumar

Stars: Manoj Bajpai, Hrishitaa Bhatt, Vijay Raaz, Govind Namdeo, Mustaque Khan, Sanjay Mishra, Abhay Puniani, Nitin Arora

Creative Quotient
A businessman (Manoj Bajpai) has his office sealed because of a new law. He tries to convince the powers-that-be of his innocence and get the order revoked but faces the usual corrupt machinery. A loyal friend (Vijay Raaz) tries to help him on his own volition with some smart manipulations only to make things worse. As business plummets, the hapless businessman who, as his wife (Hrishitaa Bhatt) puts it, never gives up, decides to do some legal jugaad (trickery) of his own.

Technical Expertise
When a real-life story (this is said to have happened with the film’s producer Sandiip Kapur) is taken as a base, the treatment should be judicious. Director Anand Kumar improves on his debut disaster Delhii Heights but the story does not generate an audience connect because no one is likely to feel sympathy for a rich man with a serious problem that still allows him to conduct business (even if less lucrative) and lead a good lifestyle.

The pace keeps things generally interesting, but the dialogues vary from incisive to inane and the screenplay fails to have intensity and generate sympathy for the hero. The villain having a twin brother gives a very implausible angle to something that is supposed to have happened in real life and therefore should have been junked.

The technical side is competent and Vijay Raaz shines in an underplayed, serious role. Manoj Bajpai as the hero, Hrishitaa Bhatt as his wife and Govind Namdeo as the two villains are sincere. And Sanjay Mishra as the jugaadi is once again very funny.

Verdict
One star for the sincerity of intentions and one for the brevity that does not make the film boring.
