Celebrates only in moments

Producer: Mukesh Bhatt
Directors: Raksha Mistry, Hasnain S Hyderabadwala
Writer: Shagufta Rafique
Cast: Adhyayan Suman, Anjana Sukhani, Shahana Goswami, Humayun Saeed

Creative Quotient
This is director duo Raksha Mistry - H. S. Hyderabadwala’s third screen outing. The first two projects being The Killer and The Train, both of which didn’t quite make the mark. This Mahesh Bhatt presentation (who’s allegedly ghost directed it) is rich in emotional quotient, which evidently is Bhatt’s handiwork. The rest of the narrative, however, is neither convincing nor mature enough. A 22-year-old aspiring musician Akash Verma (Adhyayan) plays in hotel for food and a beer once a week and dreams of being a singing superstar. He lives with his troubled sister, Nisha (Shahana) who has given up her modelling career for the love of a married and wealthy businessman, Bajaj (Humayun). She surrenders herself to the denigration and sub-human treatment for no apparent rhyme or reason. On the other hand, Akash falls in love at first sight with US-returned, rich heiress Sara (Anjana). Ironically, Sara turns out to be his sister’s abusive lover’s sister! Complications galore...the rich tycoon brother pokes a spoke in the wheel of Akash’s nascent career. Amidst all the frustration, Sara leaves her home and joins him. Much sobered down by the harsh realities of life, Akash takes up the job of a sanitary cleaner in a five-star hotel... as if there was no other option! Finally and most predictably, Akash wins a TV talent contest among cheers and tears. The plot is moth-eaten and the narrative is retro. Not a big score in terms of creativity here. Writer Shagufta Rafique fails to sustain the excitement and zest of youth in the film.

Technical Expertise
Director duo is quite at large about their subject matter. The impoverished siblings– the hero and his sister live in a sea-side bungalow. The struggling band has a music room by the bay, if you please. The dialogues lack punch. It is only in moments that you catch glimpses of the raw emotions and energy that used to be Mahesh Bhatt’s signature style. The finale is charged with emotions but the story is bereft of depth and meaning. What is most baffling is that the protagonists of the film do nothing except cringe and crib. How come neither Shahana nor Anjana have any job? They just sell their jewellery and household things to make money? How regressive is that? Another perplexing thing is that Shahana, apparently, a free-spirited modern girl doesn’t mind taking verbal, emotional and physical abuse from her lover. Why cower and cringe before such a cad? Of the actors – Adhyayan and Shahana are impressive and emotive in moments. But Shahana’s rant act gets grating at times. Anjana serves the decorative purpose. Pakistani actor Humayun has an impressive body language but the same cannot be said about his histrionic ability.

Weak plot and unimpressive music by three music composers Sharib -Toshi , Nouman Javaid, and Sandesh Shandilya are the biggest let-downs of this Bhatt venture.

Verdict
Two stars - for the raw emotions and ressurective spirit that typifies any Mahesh Bhatt product.
