A remake of the Tamil Devathaye Kandein (with Dhanush and Sridevi in the lead), Jaaji Mallige tells the story of Ramu, who goes about selling tea on his bicycle. He falls in love with a college girl, Uma. Later, bowing to parental pressure and bothered about practical concerns, Uma marries a doctor. Ramu goes to court, filing a suit against Uma for having betrayed him. Though the theme is the same in both the films, the presentation in this version is rather uninteresting and a bit disappointing too.
Technical Expertise
As for the story, Jaaji Mallige remains faithful to Devathaye Kandein. But the proceedings in the first half are presented in a rather dull manner, boring us and testing our patience. The climax, of course, has been handled with deftness, but it’s a test of your patience to arrive to that point. The lead pair doesn’t impress you at all. Komal Kumar is good while Jayamala impresses in a cameo. Jaaji Mallige is not up to the mark, in technical aspects too. The songs are unimpressive.
Verdict
One star for the subject and the story.
