Sukh
What happens when a middle class family of about a dozen members living in a modest house is suddenly blessed with Rs 3 crores? Hats Off Productions’ latest outing Sukh By Chance on Sony attempts to find just that
Continuing in the tradition of a typical J.D. Majethia-Aatish Kapadia production, Sukh By Chance is set in a Gujarati family, somewhere in Bhuleshwar where a big joint family is living a cheek-by-jowl existence, where the patriarch (Mohan Mehta) believes that hard work is the only way to earn money and while his young daughter believes in moving with the times. But at the end of the day, they are a happy bunch.

Majethia says sukh is never by chance but by choice. “You can’t count sukh in terms of material things because there is never an end to our material cravings. Happiness and peace of mind lies in little things and we know that but most of the times we are running behind something that’s sure to give us sleepless nights. It’s this idea which the channel wanted us to work out. We had plans of another show but when we heard this idea we decided to do it.” Majethia says he completely identifies with Mohanlal’s family because he too has started off from a one-room-house with eight members. “We know what it is to live happily in that small space and I’m sure the viewers too will find it relatable.”

The set of this show is a typical middle class house complete with achar ki barnis, a loft with a small bed, nice little quaint pieces of furniture and a lot of laughter, courtesy the members of the cast who break into a song , a dialogue and so on to give the media a flavour of the things to come. Ask Majethia if they are falling into a rut of making typical, Gujarati-flavoured shows and he says he doesn’t call it a disadvantage, “I think we do complete justice to these shows. So whenever a channel has a subject like this they think of us, they trust us. And what’s wrong in making something with a Gujarati backdrop. It’s not a question of which community we are choosing but about the right backdrop, the correct references. Also, on television, only a few things work well like a Punjabi family, a Gujarati family or a Rajasthani/Marwari family…of late, a Maharashtrian family too is working well. Last but not the least, Gujarat is a huge market for TV producers. Ratings are strong there, you know a Tarak Mehta is a huge success in a Gujarat market. It’s all about doing something with a universal appeal.”

Sukh By Chance started this Monday (November 10) at 9 pm. Is 9 pm a great slot considering a reality show like Bigg Boss is the alternative? “9 pm is a family slot. Bigg Boss is not a family show. You need a certain maturity to watch the participants inside that house and wonder why they behave like that. It’s not for children. Then you have Bidaai, again where the drama is not really for children. You have another show called Pati, Patni Aur Woh which is about children but not for them…so Sukh By Chance is a great viewing alternative for family audiences.”

And finally, Sony is not really known for its fiction shows. The channel is known to get weaker numbers for their fiction. “Yes, but it’s not something I have discovered now. I know it already and yet I am on this channel simply because my job is to provide content. I feel viewers should give this show at least eight episodes to settle down because the story will unfold beautifully and I do have a desire to see Sukh By Chance getting them the numbers,” he smiles.
