IG is a typical Suresh Gopi film, with exactly all those ingredients that you’d expect in a Suresh Gopi brand of thriller. Durgaprasad IPS (Suresh Gopi), who has been in charge of the traffic department, is made the chief of the newly- formed Anti Terrorist Squad. This action is taken by the State Chief Minister (Rajan. P. Dev) after he is convinced that terrorists are moving over to Kerala with some real deadly plans. Durgaprasad and his team, comprising of Vakkachan (Vijayaraghavan), Damodaran Pillai (Jagathy Sreekumar) and Diwakar (Kiran Raj) go scouting for all those who are set to terrorise Kerala and have killed the State Home Secretary (Sreeraman). B. Unnikrishnan, who scripts as well as directs the movie, also includes a family element by presenting the protagonist’s family, comprising of his mother (Lakshmi) and his brother (Govind Padmasurya). But the film is essentially a typical Suresh Gopi brand of action thriller.
Technical Expertise
On the technical front, the film is rather good, with camerawork, art-direction and editing that suit the tempo of the film. The director could have avoided the lone song. It would have been better if IG had a bit more pace and the editing was a bit slicker. Suresh Gopi does full justice to the title role while all the others fit into their respective roles. As for Ashish Vidyarthi, the man who had mesmerised us years back with his work in Govind Nihalani’s Drohkaal, seeing him repeat himself in such meaningless roles is rather tiresome. Govind Padmasurya, who played the lead in the critically- acclaimed Adayalangal, is good as the hero’s brother.
Verdict
Two stars, one for Suresh Gopi’s presence and one for the direction and treatment.
