To break the stereotyped image of a serious film actor, Tisca Chopra is trying out newer avenues in her upcoming comic flick 'Rangeen.'

"I want to do something new and fresh. If I wanted regularity I would have taken up a nine to five job. I want to flex my acting muscle and see what else I can do," says Chopra famed for her role of a dyslexic child's mother in 'Taare Zameen Par.'

The actress also won accolades for her performance in Nandita Das's directorial venture 'Firaaq', a film based on Gujarat riots and its effect on people.

After two films dealing with serious problems in people's lives, the actress is now taking a breather with 'Rangeen', a film from the producer of 'Bheja Fry,' Sunil Doshi.

Chopra says her character in 'Rangeen' is "very different from 'Taare Zameen Par' or 'Firaaq'. It will be a surprise for audiences, I am sure!"

"The script is awesome, very unusual. I fell off my seat laughing when I read it. I have known Sunil Doshi for many years and he has done some excellent and unusual films," says Chopra.

The actor refuses to be straitjacketed into one genre, and says for her the script plays a decisive role in choosing a film.

"I only do those films that I think I would enjoy watching. I look for well written scripts, comedy or drama or action thriller, the genre is irrelevant. It should be a great story to watch, that's all," Chopra said in an email interview.

A graduate in English Literature from Delhi's Hindu College, Chopra has also worked for the theatre.

So when asked what her preference is she says, "How can you ask me to choose between apples and oranges? Both are quite different from each other requiring different skill sets. Theatre needs stamina and memory and months of rehearsals.

"Acting for the camera is another ball game, you need to know lighting, angles and shots- if it is a close up or a mid shot. The camera is like a new boyfriend, you don't want it to know, but you are constantly aware that it is there."

After a not-so-successful debut with the 1995 release 'Platform' the actress had made a comeback of sorts with the Aamir Khan directed 'Taare Zameen Par'. In the interim she says she was occupied in honing her skills.

The actress reveals, "I was busy learning to be a better actor and training with Naseeruddin Shah, watching plays and reading books. I travelled a lot and went to Bali, New York and Rohtang and Lahaul-Spiti. I enjoy white water rafting and trekking, so I did a lot of that.

"And- also if you recollect, I did a tonne of television work; 'Kahani Ghar Ghar ki', 'Astitva', 'Sarrkar' and a show called 'Main Hoon Na'."

Tisca Chopra also does not rule out the possibility of making a film in the future.

"Never say never! Life takes you to places that you can't imagine going. Maybe if I find a script that I like well enough to devote a year or more to, why not?"
