I feel undeserving on being awarded Padma Shri: Saif

SaifHe is accepting the title with all humility.
He is one of the youngest actors to have been honoured with Padma Shri and many may be wondering if it isn't too early for him to receive the award.

But they are not the only one as actor Saif Ali Khan himself is pretty low key about the entire affair.

He is accepting the title with all humility but still truly believes that there are many more people out there who truly deserved it more than him.

"Honestly speaking, I feel really humbled and undeserving on being awarded the Padma Shri. It isn't something that I had asked for and since Government of India has done this for me, all I can do is to deliver my best and live up to it," Saif said in an interview.

In the past, some of the biggest names in the field of entertainment who have been conferred with National honours are veterans like Amitabh Bachchan (Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan), Rajnikanth (Padma Bhushan) and Kamal Hassan (Padma Shri).

This year, Aamir Khan has joined the elite list with a Padma Bhushan against his name. Bollywood diva Rekha has also been awarded with Padma Shri this year.

"Each of the names that you mention are so distinguished and they truly deserve a National honor at this level," said Saif.

"This is why I feel a little low key because in current times, someone like Aamir Khan truly deserves a Padma Bhushan. May be I wasn't really worthy of it. There are many people who deserve it much more me," the actor said.

"I associate this award with senior people who have achieved much more than me in their career. This is why I feel a little strange though perhaps 10 years down the line when I look back at it, all of this may seem a lot more natural," Saif added.

But at the same time the actor does not plan to take the honour too seriously.

"I can't take this title too seriously after all. Yes, it's a national honor and great recognition. Still, I don't think that while interacting with me, people in the industry would be reminded of this honour," Saif said.

"Also, I don't think it is going to affect public perception about me. As for being 'Nawab of Pataudi', then well, it doesn't quite hold true since my father is the last to be carrying this title," the actor added.

Though he is happy about the government recognizing his contribution to cinema, he adds that he is still waiting for some popular awards coming his way.

"I have never won a Filmfare or a Screen award for being the Best Actor. It is nice to see that government believes otherwise. Now this is something that will always stay on in my mind. I have to keep doing good to great work and live up this recognition in my future choices and endeavour," the actor said.

Padma Awards, a Honour or a recognition? by Ramanathan Venkatraman on 2010-01-30 19:21:58.112986+05:30 Padma Awards are consistently conferred on the eve of the Republic Day. A Government headed by Morarji Desai in 1977 did not confer the Awards saying, Constitution says no body can be conferred a honour by the State save degrees, diplomas, Doctorate etc. Padma Awards are conferred on the recommendation of the Home Minsitry, with the Leader of the Opposition also sitting on to the Committee. Just as a writer pointed out Rekha was conferred Padma Shri in 2010 and is bracketed with Saif Ali Khan, and Kamal Hassan has been conferred Padma Shri while Aamir Khan conferred Padma Bushan. Is the Awards conferred based on their entertainment value and money they make in the box-office. There are many Social workers, educationalists, farmers who have achieved something noval, industralists who have shown the resilence to stand against the mighty MNC, teachers who have created brilliant students. All these people never enter the "Hall of Fame" .Padma Awards confer no honour or recognition.

Mr. by Rakesh Sharma on 2010-01-30 11:28:59.652871+05:30 One gets such awards after having done something remarkable in the past, and personally speaking, though I have liked some of Saif's films, I fail to understand as to how he could be bestowed on with such a prestigeous National award by the Government. In other words, I feel that it is as good as demeaning the award. And, poor Rekha has also been given the same award. Again, bracketing her with Saif, it is a mistake on the part of the ones who decides such awards.

Honesty is a painful policy by ANIL MATHEW on 2010-01-30 10:59:19.26053+05:30 Give the man a break! At least he was honest. Most recipients of these awards hardly deserve a free ice-cream!

cine actors and govt honors by sri on 2010-01-30 09:31:09.264582+05:30 Actors earn crores of rupees for each film paying inaapropriate tax/tax evation at various levels. They also get fame larger than their life. Their status is based on lies, lies, lies and cheating people with their built up image. Nothing is real. By awarding govt honors to these actors, govt has lost its value. There are directors, musicians who contributed to people with originality throughout their lifetime. They are the people meant for govt honors in cine field. If suitable persons are not available, there shall be no selection for that year. Here is the case the person himself says he is not eligible. For selecting for awards, govt should give valid citation and justification. Action of the govt shall be well thought out one.

Bloody ridiculous by Parag on 2010-01-30 08:16:45.245275+05:30 A mockery of national awards. They have the same meaning as the people deciding them, our political system and our leaders - they are WORTHLESS. Of course, pandering to the pan-islamic, pro-jihadi industry that Bollywood represents, it always helps to schmooze up to them in whatever way or form.

Confession? by Ash on 2010-01-29 23:45:54.811649+05:30 This may incidentally be a confession. His father stood in MP elections from Congress party, and his mother is the Chairmen of Censor board. Whenever there is a public contest of a Company, the employees and their families cannot participate in the contest. So Saif are you going to be honest, and refuse the Padma award?

Is it a true statement? by George P. Joseph on 2010-01-29 17:29:10.093709+05:30 Beware of telling truth. Be in the mainstream of feigned faces of politics and favoritism. The aged great Hindi Writer cast off the Honour. Follow suit. That is the great honour, if your conscience beckons you.

You are right by Makarand on 2010-01-29 17:07:04.398728+05:30 There is nothing for which you should be awarded. Earlier it was a mediocre carrier you had. Your recent run with movies has been horoundous. You have Sharmila Tagore and Patoudi on your side.
