Ace model and actor Milind Soman was in Delhi recently, as a jury member for the model auditions, a hunt for fresh faces for the upcoming Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week. Milind talks to Ashok Kumar of Expressindia at the event.

How has modeling changed from your times to the present?

The models today, are much better and more groomed than my era. There were no fashion weeks when I modeled.

How are ramp models different from those who model in advertisements?

Ramp models are different from ad-models. To be a ramp model, apart from looks and personality one should also have a good height.

How much looks matter in modelling?

Looks do matter in modeling. But having said that, I would like to add that looks are not the only thing.

You said a model needs a good body? How do you define that ‘good body’?

You should have a good body on which you should be able to wear anything. A model should be able to carry along his wardrobe appropriately.

What I mean is, you need not be a body builder to become a good model. If a guy has a body of a body builder, he cannot put different variety of clothes.

What are the new challenges, which have come in modeling?

In my times if there were 20 models, now there are 20,000 models. At that time there were not so many challenges in modeling. To choose a right model is a big challenge these days.

Moreover, now it is not just Punjab but people from other regions are also coming. I would love to see all people from all over India on the ramp.

Has modeling become a popular way for a ticket to Bollywood?

No doubts about that. It is viewed as a launch pad for Bollywood. It is because once you get into modeling, you get into limelight and get noticed. So in a way it gives the wannabe actors a platform to showcase themselves.

Talking about films, what types of roles you like to go for?

I don’t like to do mainstream cinema. For me, story is the most important factor before I decide to take a plunge for any role.
