Out of context
In the 21st century, when progress in every sector is in everybody’s minds and the aim is to make the world and specially India reach the zenith in every area, here comes a film that shows that education is not important. The emphasis is so much that later when the importance of education is explained it does not hold fort. Also when Marathi films are creating wonders with impressive storylines and wellmade structures, the film is out of context.

The villagers of Vaitagwadi are a lazy lot with a laid-back attitude. The men folk, the women and even the children love to idle away their time and hate the idea of working. Since no one is interested in education, the village school is in shambles. Even the sarpanch shows no interest in developing the village. At this juncture comes Satpute, a 75 year old retired school teacher with the hope of re-opening the school. Many teachers have come and gone back trying to re-open the school but in vain. Satpute with the help of village lad Bajaa decides to open the school but there are no willing students. But the entry of Sundara, a beautiful and well-educated girl makes people change their minds. Since she is Satpute’s guest and lives with him, there is a long queue to meet her or even just have a glimpse of her. Unknowingly the villagers begin to work all thanks to Sundara who sweet talks them. The men flock to school as Sundara is the teacher.

TECHNICAL EXPERTISE :

Shot in a remote village, the look of the film is not all that appealing. What is disgusting is the men of the village, all sizes and ages, falling for Sundara and even making it obvious to her. She plays along. Though it may be in good fun, it is not enjoyable. This film hardly brings in any laughter. Only thing worth a real mention in the film is Nilu Phule who plays school teacher Satpute. Despite his age, he is very convincing in his role.
