Is that all you have to say?
Actually it has been a great trip. A lovely, young and successful wife, two beautiful daughters, a blissful life with them and a wonderful career, what more can I ask for?
What is it about Bhavana that you like a lot?
What is it about her that I like a lot? (Ponders) Actually there is nothing that I don’t like about her. I have had so many girlfriends in the past but I never felt the urge to marry them. But with Bhavana it was pure love from the beginning and continues to be so. She is the only woman for me ever.
Does she feel that same about you?
You will have to ask her that.
Coming to your career, you started as the hero and gave some very good films. What happened for you to suddenly fade away from the scene?
Having played the hero in so many films, I must say I was bored of it. Now I am happy as I am getting to do a variety of roles. Since I am playing a new person every day, I feel like a new person myself. Every man dreams of having a new wife but I dream of a new character every day. And a new person can have a new wife, can’t he? (laughs heartily) Frankly speaking this is a lovely phase of my career as I am as busy as ever.
You sound very happy doing bit roles.
I received adulation as a hero here. Then I became the superstar of Bangladeshi films. I enjoyed my term there. I loved the fat heroines and the local food and I put on eleven kilos.
When you liked it so much there why did you return?
I suffered a slip disc after lifting a fat heroine and that was it. I took the next flight back to Mumbai. (laughs)
But work seemed to evade you here, right?
I am like Aamir Khan. Like him, I had just one release last year, Fool N Final. But 2008 is going to be my year. There are not going to be any nominations for me, only awards. (laughs)
So confident and why is that?
I have my hands full actually. I am doing two films with Mukta Arts. Hello Darling is a comedy revolving around three heroines and a villain. Gul Panag, Celina Jaitley and Isha Koppikar are the girls and I am enjoying my role that is like Elvis Presley. Well-known theatre personality Parritosh Painter is directing Paying Guest that also has Shreyas Talpade and Jaaved Jaffrey starring in it. This film may release in October. Nineteen years after working in Tezaab, Anil Kapoor and I are teaming again in his Short Cut. Salman Khan played the role of Love Guru in Partner, similarly in Short Cut I play Acting Guru and teach acting to Arshad Warsi. Anubhav Sinha’s Sankat City, directed by Pankaj Advani, is like Life In A …Metro that was about lovers, but this film deals with a bunch of crooks. After My Friend Ganesha, director Rajiv Ruia is working on another composite animated film titled Ronny N Rocky. I play a detective in it and even become a monkey. I am also working on a Hollywood project. My show on Filmy titled Rocky is still going strong and I am enjoying it as now kids from the age of two to 12 know me. If a child comes and asks me, “Uncle, what is your name?”, I tell him, “Go and ask your mom.” (laughs)
There were talks of a sequel to Aankhen, your successful film with Govinda and David Dhawan. Is it happening?
How they can ever make the film without me and the monkey who has now grown into an ape? (laughs) On a serious note, Aankhen was made at a time when sequels were not an in-thing. If it was so, then today there would have made Aankhen 9 and Aankhen 10 considering what a success it was at that time.
When you are not doing films, are you busy with your restaurant business?
I have taken a break from that and presently I am very busy with my event company called Rock N Roll. We mostly deal with corporate clients. Right now I am reeling in shock with the catastrophe of the share market. I have undergone major losses. But despite all this don’t I look young and healthy? (chuckles)
What is the secret behind this, may we ask?
When I am not worrying about the above things, I keep myself busy swimming. I eat 12 oranges a day and have 16 cups of green tea. Yeh hai meri jawaani ka raaz.
Coming back to your anniversary, how did you celebrate?
I was busy shooting that day so I have now planned a long holiday for her. I will not disclose the destination as it will no longer be a surprise then. My wife is always miffed with me as she says that I am unemployed the whole year and when it is our anniversary, the kid’s birthday or holidays or festivals, I get busy with work. So there is no time for a family vacation.
