Senior BJP leader L K Advani described the fuel price hike as the signing of the "death warrant" of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government at the Centre.

"The measure is a result of economic mismanagement of the UPA government and an opportunistic alliance at the Centre," he said while talking to mediapersons on the sidelines of a function in Pune.

Advani said the Rs 50 increase in LPG cylinder price showed an "insensitive" attitude of the government towards the common man.

In the highest ever price rise, the government on Wednesday announced a hike of Rs 5 per litre of petrol, Rs 3 on diesel and Rs 50 per LPG cylinder together with customs and excise duty cuts to combat spurt in global oil prices.

The government dithered over the issue till global crude prices touched an all-time high of 135 US dollars a barrel and announced the increase on Wednesday, at a time when general elections are on the horizon.
