Model-turned-host Dipannita Sharma is ready to sizzle on the silver-screen as the judge of MTV’s new show on fashion and models, Making The Cut. In an interview to Screen, she talks about her mentoring skills and her idea of fashion

Why the sudden decision to do television?
The concept was very close to me and fashion is something to which I can totally relate. This is a fashion-based reality show and I had to mentor models. That was a real challenge because I have never judged a reality show and I am very passionate and serious about it. It sounds like a fun, easy-to-do job but I shall be sharing my own experiences with them. I am going to be honest and tell them what works and what doesn’t.

What is different about Making The Cut?
It is a unique, first-of-its-kind show based on fashion. We have hardly had any fashion-based shows, so I wanted to be a part of this. We also have Narendra Kumar Ahmed working with the designers so it is truly a unique experience. Also unlike other reality shows, we do not have any unnecessary drama.

What are your criteria for judging the show?
The most important criteria is that you have to be talented. As I am looking at mentoring them to be models, I shall be focussing on fitness and agility. You have to be fit enough to be a model. I am going to be judging them on the basis of their performance on the various tasks given to them.

What advice are you giving the contestants on the show?
I try to understand where they are coming from and what they are looking at. A lot of them are confused about what they want while some are very sure. I want to help them figure out whether Bollywood or modelling is their final destination. I am trying to solve their problems as well as help them tackle criticism. I am going to be honest and tell them the truth, however harsh it may be.

Of all the contestants who do you think has the potential to make it big?
All the kids are very good, hardworking and talented. It is a very tough job for us so I can’t really pick one of them. Everyday is a new surprise for us.

Who are the guest judges along with you on the show?
We had Lara Dutta and Mahesh Bhupati on the show. Neil Nitin Mukesh and Madhur Bhandarkar were also the celebrity judges for one episode. Neha Dhupia and a couple of others will also be present.

You too have been a model. What does fashion mean to you?
A lot of them say fashion is about being comfortable, but fashion for me is style along with comfort. Be stylish and have a style of your own. Individuality is extremely important. Something might be in vogue all over the world but if it doesn’t suit you it’s blasphemous to wear it. I have always admired Nicole Kidman’s sense of style. The way she dresses and the way she carries it is amazing. Even Angelina Jolie is very stylish.

Would you agree to be a part of a reality show like Bigg Boss?
I have already been a part of Fear Factor 1 and it is one of those things you do once in a lifetime. I will talk about Fear Factor to my grandchildren and tell them about my escapades. But I have had my share. I don’t think I am ready to be a participant once again.
