Filmwallahs, a group of struggling actors, pool in their resources to make their own film

IT was six months ago that a group of wannabe actors got together to form a community called Filmwallahs. Ever since their inception, not only have they increased in number, their aspirations too have risen. Luckless in fickle Bollywood, Filmwallahs has now decided to adhere to self-employment.

“There are 1,500 members in the group now and we have been constantly struggling to make it in various departments of filmmaking in Bollywood,” says Anirudh Chawla, head of the community. “We will not give up easily, we have planned to launch our own production house and make a film on our own too.”

It sure is a noble thought, but the title and concept of the film will have people startled. The movie, titled Balls Hain Kya?, will be India’s first reality film, where a total of eight people will reveal their dramatic personalities and their past sexual history on camera. “It will go beyond the controversies that Bigg Boss and Sach Ka Saamna created,” says Chawla, positive about the Censor Board’s approval of the film. “The concept would be fiery, adult and sensational but we will not be using any kind of foul language. I have spoken to the members of the Censor Board and they are okay with giving it an ‘A’ certificate.”

While the crew for the film—writers, directors, technicians, RJs, VJs and singers will be from the Filmwallahs community, auditions will be conducted across the country to select few of the actors. “That’s because we are looking for a variety of people—single, married, old, young, liberal, conservative and flamboyant, who will represent Indian society as a whole,” says the director cum host of the film, who will reveal dark secrets about each of the participants, in the film.

The eight chosen people will be kept in a farm house for a couple of days and asked questions pertaining to their sexual lives. “This film is going to be a Hum Aapke Hain Koun, with sex in it. We will have parties, dumb charades and Antakshari as part of the film. Besides, my aim is to show our society that prostitution, sexual compromise, abused women, HIV+ victims, homosexuals, unfaithful husbands and incest are rampant in society,” he states.

While the concept of pooling in resources and making an offbeat film sounds quite a challenge, one wonders about the funds. “Each member will pool in Rs 5,000 and the movie will be made within a budget of Rs 50 lakh,” says Chawla.

Going by its offbeat nature, the movie also has a voting system. “For the first time, we will have audience interaction in a film. People who watch the film in the first 10 days will be asked to vote for the ‘bold’ contestant. A radio station that has teamed up with the film will give daily updates of votes and will also give Rs 50,000 worth prizes per day. Depending on the votes, the winner in the film will then get a prize of Rs 5 lakh. This will help promote the film,” confirms Chawla, who believes that this is a step towards a new format of filmmaking.

“We have pushed the boundaries of filmmaking. We start auditioning in two weeks and then shooting in January. If this clicks, we will soon start work on our second project.”
