You seemed very confident about Halla Bol, but apparently the audiences did not take to it in a big way.
I am always confident about what I do, whether it works or not is not in my hands. Yes, Halla Bol may not have got the response we expected, but the reviews were good and those who have seen it have appreciated it. Of course it would be great if more people see it. After all, the film is a sincere effort to create awareness about the atrocities going on in society and how we as citizens can do our bit.

The digs in the film, that celebrities dance at weddings for money while others have extra-marital affairs were reportedly aimed at Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan respectively.
The allegations were not made at any person in particular. And celebrities need not be only film stars, they can be industrialists or people from any other profession. I think someone is just trying to create a buzz for nothing. And it's high time all this rivalry talk between Shah Rukh Khan and me stopped! It's 12 years yaar!

A serious film like Halla Bol on one hand, and a comedy like Sunday on the other. How was it working on two such diverse subjects at the same time?
Both are characters and as an actor I put in the same effort and hard work, whether it is a comedy or a Halla Bol. And the working atmosphere on the sets is the same. Even while shooting for Halla Bol we would fool around between shots, so as far as I am concerned there is no extra stress or pressure while working in a serious film.

Would you give director Rohit Shetty the credit for bringing out the comic side in you with Golmaal and now Sunday?
I would definitely thank Rohit for giving me a Golmaal and a role so diverse to my image. Rohit's forte is the impeccable paperwork he does before he starts shooting for a film. It's so well-bound that even comedy becomes a cakewalk! If comedy is not put down well on paper then an actor has to resort to making faces and other gimmicks for the desired effect. Yes I am thankful to Rohit for the way he goes about making comedies and makes us actors appear so effortless!

Comedies seemed to have become your forte. After Sunday there is Golmaal Returns!
I enjoy doing comedies. We are all bogged down by stress and these films make you happy. I found Sunday's concept, where a Sunday goes missing in my girlfriend's life, very unique. Likewise, my character DCP Rajveer who tries to solve this mystery is very intriguing, as he does not stick to any norms. If Sunday is a thriller laced with humour, Golmaal Returns is just laughs! And please, I am not going in for a makeover as a comedy hero. I want to do films that I believe in, serious or funny.

What would you like to say about U Me Aur Hum, your first directorial venture?
I always say that I became an actor by default, as I dreamed of becoming a director! But the subject had to be right, as direction is all about inspiration. When I hit upon this subject of an evergreen romance I was so inspired that as I worked on it, I decided to turn director. The film involves a lot of fine print and I hope the audiences can read between the lines and see the moments. Anyway, otherwise they can just sit back and enjoy it!

Kajol and you are playing yourselves in Toonpur Ka Super Hero, a 3D animation film for children. Is it a gift for your daughter Nysa?
I am doing the film not for Nysa, but because there is a dearth of good films being made for children. And I was very charged with the subject, where I land in this world of cartoons and transform into a real hero. Kireet Khurana, who is directing it, is a five-time national award winner for cartoon films and it will be India's first animation film with live action. I have not started shooting for it as yet as pre-production for animation films takes a long time, but I am waiting for it to take off.

Once again you will be working with Kajol. Does working with a spouse make things more difficult or easier?
Once on sets we are both actors and things are as easy or difficult as they would be with any other co-star! But yes, as a wife she is more difficult!

What about Nysa - is she more like you or Kajol?
I would like to believe that she is more like me! (Laughs) She is like any other four-year-old who loves movies, though I discourage her from watching my films. But I could not dissuade her from watching television. She started watching movies on the small screen and knows every actor now. I was secretly so pleased when Nysa told me that I was her favourite actor! For a four-year-old she is extremely aware. Recently when I was travelling with her we saw a hoarding of Sachin Tendulkar and I asked her who it was. She said it was Sachin Tendulkar…… and he sells biscuits!

You are doing Raj Kumar Santoshi's Ashok and Ramayan. Do you prefer playing mythological heroes than say, playing a superhero like Superman or a Spiderman?
I have been approached with many scripts where I could play superhero, but I have not liked any! There is a great satisfaction from playing characters like Bhagat Singh and Ashok. We are working on Ashok's script right now and if all goes well the film should be on the floor in a few months time. Our film starts after the Kalinga war when Ashok the emperor embraces Buddhism and his journey towards greatness begins.

We believe that you continue to cook. The cast and crew of U Me Aur Hum rave about your barbeque kebabs and grilled fish!
Cooking relaxes me! I picked up the skill from my dad!

And you also continue to dislike doing interviews…
Yes! (laughs) I don't like doing interviews. It takes me months to prepare myself for one and I am too lazy to do that. So I only talk when I have something to say about my films!
