




Bala escapes unhurt
Tamil and Malayalam film actor Bala escaped unhurt after his caravan met with an accident at Pullikkanam Elappaly on October 20, police said. The actor, along with the film unit, were on their way to a shooting site at Moolamettam near the hilly Vagamon tourist spot near Idukki, when the vehicle’s brake failed and hit a tree.
Reacting after the mishap, Bala said, “God has saved me”. He was provided first-aid at Moolamattam Bishop Vayil hospital. Bala has played leading roles in various films, including Puthiya Mukham, Kalabham, SMS, Chembade, Big B and Sagar Alias Jacky.
Medics charged for death of Bangla top star
A Bangladeshi court on October 18 charged six doctors with criminal negligence over the death of a top film star, who donned the role of an angry young man and whose demise last year led to public mourning in the country.
SM Aslam Talukder ‘Manna’, 44 was the top actor of the Bangladesh film industry known as ‘Dhallywood’. He died of a heart attack at United Hospital Limited. Judge Firoz Alam of the Special Judge’s Court-1 rejected the discharge petitions by the physicians and framed charges against them.
The court also fixed November 1 for starting trial of the case. Manna’s brother-in-law Reza Kader filed the case with Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court of Dhaka against the doctors and members of the board of directors on September 17 last year.
The complainant alleged that Manna was in the hospital without treatment for over five hours.
Manna became a folk hero to millions of people of his country during his 23-year career. He appeared in more than 200 films, often as an angry young man fighting a corrupt system.At his funeral in February last year, police fired tear-gas to control fans desperate for a last glimpse of their favourite star.
