Aamir khan

Aamir Khan won himself the maximum votes among Bollywood’s top-rung stars as the actor who best represents new and improved Bollywood. The Screen C-Fore survey revealed that 28 per cent of the respondents thought Aamir best represented the changing face of Hindi cinema. Considering that Taare Zameen Par (TZP), his first film as a director, has been chosen as the Indian entry for the Academy Awards, Aamir is an apt choice indeed. As Kunal Kohli, Aamir’s Fanaa director and close friend puts it, “It’s very true. Whether he does a Rang De Basanti with its inspirational undertone, Fanaa, a classic old-world love story or Taare Zameen Par with its serious subject he treads a different path. In that respect, he is truly representative of the change. Aamir has a very strong commercial sense which shines through in Taare Zameen Par - any other filmmaker would have made it in a non-commercial format. But with Aamir helming it, the film has done very well with its B-O collections. He also has a lot of old-world charm and the whole package of the old and the contemporary make him very interesting.”

Director Ram Madhvani, who directed a song in Taare Zameen Par said, “TZP is a film that makes you cry and smile and also entertains you. And above all, it changes your attitude towards your children. What more can one ask for from any film? And what more can one ask for from any man?”

Winning accolades for his performance as a loverboy in his first lead role in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, it seemed that Aamir Khan would be stuck with the eternal loverboy image. But the actor sprung surprise after surprise as he experimented with roles, from playing a Bhuvan to a Mangal Pandey with equal ease. His first production Lagaan was also nominated for the Oscars in the Best Foreign Film category and now with his directorial debut Taare Zameen Par also being nominated for the Oscars, Aamir demonstrates that he has changed and emerged an actor and filmmaker par excellence. Quiz him about his varied choices and films, he grins and explains, “The script. I have to like the script, and then I give it my best!”
