Diwali release always a big ticket movie with hopes pinned on it — are you excited about All The Best releasing on the big day?
I am very excited about it. Besides, it is also my mum’s birthday on 16th so it is a happy occasion. Timing plays an important role in the success of a film and so it could not get better than this.
Three’s a crowd, they say. With two more films - Blue and Main Aur Mrs Khanna releasing, would you still say it’s a good time to release?
Well, an action movie, a comedy and a romantic film over a long weekend would mean that people can plan and watch all the movies. There’s space for everyone.
Give us a hint of what the film is about…
It’s a sitcom. A complete comedy of errors. It’s about two guys - Fardeen Khan wants to be a Rock star musician and Ajay Devgn wants to design the fastest zaniest car. I play Jahnvi, Ajay’s wife who cons people into joining my rundown gym. Ajay is concentrating on his dream car and their situation compels him to lie to Sanjay Dutt which lets loose a chain of events making the comedy.
Ajay’s character is over smart while I am the quick fix person who bails people out of a tight spot.
That sounds like you in real life…
Such comedies can hardly be called realistic but yes, Jahnvi is a lot like me in that I am no-nonsense, quite principled and don’t like lying. Sometimes it can sound a little harsh but I think it’s better to speak the truth. And yes, I often have a quick solution or two up my sleeve!
The shoot, we hear, was a breeze?
It was like an extended holiday in Goa. Everyone was working out together. The rehearsals and readings were great fun too.
So what makes a comedy work?
Great chemistry between actors, a capable director and good editing are crucial to a comedy. As an actor, you have to be spontaneous. Unlike an emotional scene where you can build up emotions in retakes, you can’t rehearse a comic scene too often because the fun element is lost. So everyone has to be quick on the take.
Which brings us to your chemistry with co-stars?
I have worked before with Ajay in Shikhar, Apharan and Zameen. He’s a fantastic actor and slipping into any role is effortless for him. He has no hang ups and gives space to every actor. Sanjay Dutt has great comic timing as well.
Your preference in comedies
I don’t like slapstick humour. I prefer sitcoms. While hearing the narration for All The Best, I had the same feeling as when I heard No Entry and agreed to the film.
Do you read joke books? Which jokes do you enjoy most?
No, never. I am not big on jokes but my dad loves Santa-Banta jokes!
So are you a serious person?
I am a funny girl. Besides my friends most people don’t know that side of me but I can be very funny and do outlandish things (laughs).
Divulge an outlandish thing you have done.
Once my best friend and I put these plastic packets on our heads, made eyes on them and stopped the car, rolling down windows asking people for directions to Pali Hill! It was so funny, because people would just keep staring and not say anything at times.
Do John and you share a similar taste on funny matters?
John has a sense of humour but not when it comes to his girlfriend. His jokes are very bawa and sometimes he’s the only one laughing at them (laughs). Actually he doesn’t even know about the packet incident! I am sure he would completely disapprove of such behaviour!
Your favourite comedy...
It would have to be Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron, one of the finest works of Kundan Shah. All actors in the film — Naseeruddin Shah, Ravi Vaswani, Om Puri, Satish Shah were a riot.
Your choice of actors who are excellent with comedy, such a difficult genre to pull off..
Akshay Kumar — he has excellent comic timing and a tremendous sense of what works with the audience. Among actresses itwould have to be Sridevi — she was amazing in Chalbaaz but could pull of any role with elan.
