Be prepared for WTC type of attacks, Antony to Army

With India's coastal security already breached by terrorists in Mumbai, Defence Minister A K Antony on Wednesday warned the armed forces of possible terror attacks from airborne platforms similar to the 9/11 attacks in the US.

Antony asked them to be prepared to counter the threat of terrorists from the air and prevent a repeat of World Trade Centre type of attacks carried out by the al-Qaida.

At a meeting with the three Services chief and Defence officials, Antony called for greater coordination among all security and intelligence agencies so as to make the intelligence inputs actionable.

The meeting, attended by Navy chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta, Air Chief Marshal Fali Homi Major and Army chief General Deepak Kapoor and Defence Secretary Vijay Singh, also reviewed the situation along the Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan in the wake of reports that its Army was on a ‘high alert’ following the Mumbai terror attacks.

Antony, sources said, worked out measures with the armed forces for tightening security and vigil along the LoC to prevent infiltration of terrorists through the land route, as "Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) is known to be an important area for recruitment and training of terrorists."

The top defence brass discussed plans for beefing up coastal security and hastening acquisition process for systems and platforms including coastal radars and interceptor boats.

Of particular concern expressed at the meeting was the intelligence warning that airports around the country could be targets of terrorists, forcing the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security to issue a red alert to secure all important airports, sources added.

POLITICIANS by sbala on 2008-12-04 16:31:26.129971+05:30 Every threat can not be followed up by a minister. It is the job of the pot bellies enjoying permanent jobs in cushy offices with so many people doing his commands. If the IAS and IPS fellows muster enough courage to dare the politicians and do their job by the country then everything will be ok. Unfortunately these fellows occupy top positions everywhere based on their caste, religion, region or recommendations. Merit is not their qualification. Even the judiciary which can not be criticized because they are above God, is run by such people. When people do not get justice where from it should, and takes ages to come by, then people turn to goondas, and in turn they become powerful, and post people of their chosing. All round corruption leads to inefficiency everywhere and the services / judiciary / politics / administration / media are not spared. Remember what Gandhi said. Honest people in governmennt are more important than intelligent ones.

Corruption by Sapr on 2008-12-04 12:00:19.600084+05:30 These politicians have got gangerene in their blood , they are suffereng from a never ending disease of corruption of such a high level that nothing can be done. The best is to hand over our country to the Armed Forces and let them deal with it in their own disciplened way. If this is not done there are a number of counted days left for iur country before it is too late.

NOT A POSTMAN, YOU ARE A DEFENCE MINISTER ! by KP PILLAI on 2008-12-04 10:30:24.783316+05:30 RATHER THAN PASSING THE INTELLIGENCE REPORT TO THE MILITARY CHIEFS AND GIVING DETAILS TO THE PRESS, HE SHOULD CARRY OUT A VISIT TO FRONT LINES EVERYWHERE AND SEE FOR HIMSELF THE ARRANGEMENTS, RATHER THAN GOING TO MAHARASHTRA TO SETTLE THE CHIIEF MINISTER DISPUTE. A VISUAL MEDIA IN KERALA CARRIED OUT SEA CROSSINGS FROM A NUMBER OF POINTS FROM THE OUTER SEA TO SHOW THE PEOPLE THAT THERE ARE NO VERIFICATION, CHECKINGS AND THE SCORES OF CONSIGNMENT OF BLACK MONEY, ARMS AND AMMUNITIONS DOCKING ON THE LONG COASTAL SIDES OF KERALA, GOES ON UNINTERRUPTED. IT IS SO UNOFRTUNATE THAT WE DO NOT HAVE A STRONG LEADERSHIP TO TAKE ACTION WITH DETERMINATION. ANYONE CAN PASS ON THE SITREPS (SITUATION REPORTS) ; NOT A BIG THING.

Minister's warning by Nair on 2008-12-04 10:24:48.988594+05:30 Antony is relatively to a big ministry such as Defense. Give the guy some time before passing judgement. Interestingly, I read some not so courteous words from Mukherjee. He is still peeved at losing the old job. Unelected representatives like Patil or Mukherjee should not be in the Ministry.

Action Awaited by S Thulasidharan on 2008-12-04 10:14:30.681155+05:30 Please act and kill the plot rather than waiting to take preventive measures. Are we afraid of Pakistanis or we are incapable of giving them a befitting reply for their dastardly actions. Now nations like Bangladesh also have started following the footsteps of Pakistan looking at the linient behavior of our Indian politicians. Are the lives of Indians so cheap. No its definitely not ! TAKE ACTION AND WE THE PEOPLE OF INDIA DEMAND ACTION AND WE NEED IMMEDIATE ACTION SO THAT THEY SHOULD THINK TWICE BEFORE EVEN PLOTTING TO ATTACK OUR DEAR NATION.

Defence ministers warning by Raju Sawde on 2008-12-03 23:05:16.659006+05:30 Even a primary school kid knows this. But what are we doing to prevent it. Today it is quite simple to take over an airport in a small town. The people manning these airports have antiquated weapons and absolutely no common sense. If a handful of guys could keep our commandos at bay for more than 2 days, imagine what would happen if such militants decide to take over a small town airport.

It was evil fighting Mother India. Now, talk about air attack! Honourable minister is giving directions to accomplished and potential terrorists. Let us rebuild Mumbai for better.

Be warned! by khuda ka banda on 2008-12-03 20:55:16.706473+05:30 Unfortunately, I cant help but laugh at the sheer stupidity of this statement. This is nothing but scoring brownie points. Terrorists have already used land and sea routes so it would be prudent for the minister to declare the air route as sensitive, if it does not happen then he takes the credit that his warning was heeded and prevented an attack and if it does he still takes credit because "I told you so". The services cater for all options, just because there are a few who get by the land route or the sea route does not mean people are not aware, they pretty well are and should be but where the government can play its part is to provide the equipment and where withall necessary to fight this scourge and not sit on their bottoms taking no decisions during their own tenures unless ogfcourse the requirement comes with an opportunity to grease palms.

1 Minister's Warning
by Nair on 2008-12-04 10:19:07.387144+05:30Comparing Anony to Patil is not fair; he just moved into the job recently. Patil has Comparing Antony, who is an elected representative, and relatively new to the ministry to Patil or Mukherjee; who are wielding power even though they have lost elections is unfair. Patil has been peddling inefficiency for some time now. Give the guy some time before passing judgement. Interestingly, I read a comment from Mukherjee about the breach of security. Seems like he is still peeved at losing his former job. He should go for retirement.

2 Defence Minister's warning
by Dr. S. Surya Prakash on 2008-12-03 22:09:06.310749+05:30Recently CAG has pointed out and the Defence Minister has confessed that IAF is using the outdated Radar Systems. Without giving the latest equipment it is on the verge insanity just to give a warning to our defence forces. This is political way of washing hands.

Air attack by Subroto Chattterjee on 2008-12-03 19:56:38.283894+05:30 If this is the case why not make mandatory to have a air marshall in all aircraft to and fro India? Just giving warning and getting your back covered should not be attitude.
