Smaran Ghosal, who played the role of 'Apu' in Satyajit Ray's Aparajito, the second film in the epoch-making Apu trilogy, died at his residence in Kolkata on Friday after a brief illness, Ghosal's family sources said.

The actor, who played the adolescent Apu in the movie, was 64 and is survived by his wife and two daughters. The film, based on popular author Bibhutibhusan Bandopadhyay's novel, was released in the early 60s and portrayed Apu's struggle for existence.
