What prompted you be a part of the Nick Fundoo Superstar promotion?
The best thing about Nick Fundoo Superstar is its simplicity. It’s a simple contest that will give children a chance to be part of a music video for this campaign. There will be no auditions or trials. Nick viewers will just need to answer simple questions about the channel’s shows and Saroj Khan will choreograph the winners as they dance with me.
How do you find working with your young colleagues?
It is a great experience. Children today are so much more informed and mature than what we were as kids. Plus their energy levels really make working with them an exciting and fun process. Working with children is all about letting yourself go and doing wild and wacky things.
Would you call yourself a natural at handling kids?
Although I do not have kids of my own, I am pretty adept at handling them. I spend a lot of time with my siblings’ children and I can proudly declare that I am their favourite aunt. I tell them stories, help them with studies and have a lot of fun.
How were you as a kid - shy and reserved or naughty and active?
As a kid I was one of those girls who would climb up trees, scrape my knees, play sports and do a whole lot of other stuff. I was a million miles away from being the cute girl in a pink frock playing with her Barbie.
Most actors say working with children is far more challenging than working with adults.
I would agree to that, but not in its traditional sense. I believe working with children is a challenge since they are more mature and informed that we take them to be. I am really surprised at their emotional maturity. Children can be just as good as us, plus they are more energetic. As adult actors we are the ones who have to cope with their levels.
You also host Jo Jeeta Wohi Superstar on Star Plus. Do you think watching contest winners compete a second time takes the sting out of a reality show?
On the contrary it raises the bar of entertainment. Yes these singers are now established and more honed at their skills than they were before, but that is where the excitement is. Before they were like amateurs competing, today it’s more like a contest between professional singers.
Do you fancy being a TV host or being part of reality programming?
I am fascinated by the idea of live performances. The kick I get out of the idea “words once spoken can never be taken back” is huge. No retakes, no rehearsals - it’s all live. It tests the character of an actor and a performer and that is the reason I like live TV and even theatre.
Would your fans ever see you return to the TV screen as an actress?
I don’t know, maybe if something like Shanti comes up. The current soap opera scenario on Indian TV is going nowhere. Serials today lack conviction, quality and good content. If something really good comes up, I will consider it.
Having been part of cricket so extensively, what’s your say on the DLF Indian Premier League?
It is huge. It is pushing the entertainment quotient in cricket and it definitely is the future of contemporary cricket.
What team do you root for?
Unfortunately whichever team I support goes on a losing spree. So I have turned to support the underdogs in every match.
