With Rock On!! up for release, Screen gets talking to debutants Farhan Akhtar, Prachi Desai and Luke Kenny

Considering that it was a debut film for the three of you, how easy was it playing your parts?
Luke:This film is not exactly a launch for me because I have done a small role in Bombay Boys before this. But Rock On!! is my first Hindi commercial film about a rock band and the life of its members. Well, let me tell you, it looks easy but it isn’t. You have to just be sincere and dedicated towards your work.
Prachi: Easy? You should be kidding me! I mean not like it was tough and stuff but I was really nervous. Let me tell you working for a daily show is really different from working in a film. The work patterns are altogether different. Having Farhan as a co-star is an added benefit. He takes charge of everything and makes you feel comfortable.

Farhan, how did you decide on the script and the cast for your film?
Farhan: Well, I have always wanted to do a film on music. So when I finally decided to do a film, I chose a script that had something to do with music. Luke was always my choice because he is a musician. As far as the rest of the star-cast was concerned, I wanted someone new to play the lead with me and Prachi fit the bill perfectly.

Was it difficult learning to play the musical instruments?
Luke: It was not difficult but challenging. I play the keyboards and thoroughly enjoyed doing that. I did not really have to learn to play any instrument because I pretty much know the basics of all of them.
Farhan: I am the lead singer of the band, so I did not really have to learn anything new. Initially I thought that I would not be able to sing, but once I got the rhythm there was no stopping !

Okay, now tell us a little about your roles.
Prachi: My role in the film is that of a young girl. I play Sakshi and she is someone who belongs to this generation. In short, I play my age. I have this look like that of a modern, chic South Mumbai girl. Though I have a very matured look in the second half of the film, it is a perfect positive character. I play the lead role opposite Farhan and trust me I could not have asked for a better debut!
Luke: I play Rob, one among the four members of the band. He is like the backbone of the band that tries to settle fights that happen amongst the members. The best part about the role is that I play the keyboards.

And how did you guys bag the role?
Prachi: After Jhalak Dikklaa Ja got over, people started recognising me! It was great in the beginning when people would flock you for autographs. That gives you such a high! Sometime later, I got a call from the Excel Entertainment office asking me to audition for the role. Apparently, Abhishek Kapoor’s mother used to watch Jhalak... religiously and that is when she suggested my name to Farhan. I went for a couple of screen tests and in a few days, I got a call from them saying that I was on board. My joy knew no bounds. I was ecstatic.
Luke: I got a call from Excel Entertainment and after they met me, Kapoor said that he wanted me to audition for Rob’s role. I had got quite a few offers for films from a lot of people. But most of them were for these Angrezi roles, which I did not want to take up. This was the best offer that came my way!

Directing, acting and now singing, what’s next on your list, Farhan?
Vacationing! Not really, if there is something that I want to do next, then that is going on a really long vacation. I want to just chill and have fun. Acting was always at the back of my mind. Even while I was behind the camera, I wanted to act. Also I have no plans to sing any more in any of my films, so please do not get any ideas.

So what do you think is going to click with the audience?
Prachi: It is an inspirational film and I am sure everybody would like it. The film says that we should live our dreams. It teaches you to achieve your dream, however impossible it may seem! Having said that, it is also very entertaining. There is not one film in the scene that would get you bored!
